Jon Bernthal already knows who he wants in The Punisher season 2

Jon Bernthal’s depiction of the infamous anti-hero was so well-received that Netflix commissioned his own solo show, The Punisher.

While the series just wrapped its freshmen run this past fall, the star is already looking ahead towards next season. In two different fan events, Bernthal has laid out exactly which heroes and villains he’d like his character to interact with, much to viewers’ excitement.

At ACE Comic-Con in Arizona, Bernthal was asked about which of The Defenders cast he would like to see appear in his series (via Screen Rant). Seemingly prepared for the question, he quickly answered that his two dream appearances would be the MVP’s of The Defenders miniseries: Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

"You know, I love Charlie [Cox]. I’ve worked with him before and I’d work with him again on anything in a heartbeat. He’s the reason I’m doing this. He brought me into this and his performance is what made me want to do it.That being said, they’re all great. I’m a huge fan of Krysten’s [Ritter] too. She’s killer and I’d love to work with her as well."

The Punisher’s interactions with Daredevil was one of the highlights of the latter’s second season, and what inspired the streaming service to start working on a solo show for the former. It would make sense for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen to butt heads with the anti-hero once again when he returns to his mantle as one of the heroes of New York. Jessica Jones would be a bit trickier to introduce into The Punisher universe because there’s no real reason for the two to interact at this point. While the two approach superheroism in different ways, they both harbor similar attitudes which would make for an interesting meeting.

Showcasing his knowledge of The Punisher comics, Bernthal was also quick to acknowledge which villains he desperately wants to see in his series (also via Screen Rant). At the recent Walker Stalker Cruise, he excitedly shared how much he would like to see Kingpin and Barracuda go head to head with Frank Castle.

"Barracuda. I’d like to see Barracuda. I’d really like to get back in with [Vincent] D’Onofrio, with Kingpin. I mean, there’s so many twisted characters. But you know, I’m really eager to see… ah, sh*t, I’m gonna get in trouble. Let’s just see what happens, man. Let’s just see what happens."

While the series looks like it’s planning to tackle a version of “The Slavers” storyline next season, there’s no reason that Barracuda couldn’t be introduced to plan for the following one. Considering how much of a fan favorite Barracuda is among fans of The Punisher comics, it seems likely the show will eventually introduce him.

As for Kingpin, it’s possible that Daredevil would seek help from Castle to help take down the mobster. Either way, neither villain seems all that outlandish to appear in the series especially since Bernthal wants them himself.

The Punisher isn’t expected to start production until sometime this year, and it’s doubtful anyone will learn any information about new characters until then. Netflix has been known to be secretive regarding their Marvel series, but it seems like fans have a pretty good shot of seeing at least one of the four characters mentioned above in the show.

Especially because showrunner, Steven Lightfoot, also spoke about his desire to see Barracuda join the series and depending on Daredevil season three Kingpin could also make the jump. Sadly, fans will have to wait how the other Defenders’ series work out this year before learning about potential cameos for The Punisher season 2.
