Lucy Liu will be sitting in the director’s chair for the upcoming season of Marvel’s Luke Cage.

Showrunner Chex Hodari Coker confirmed the news in a tweet yesterday to kick off the 13-week countdown until the premiere. While Liu doesn’t have a lot of experience directing, she does have a keen eye for art. Her career as a visual artist will definitely help her when working in the unique world of Luke Cage.

The esteemed actress dove into directing fairly recently in 2011 with the movie Meena. However, she has directed four episodes of her series Elementary and USA’s Graceland.

Both of those series are procedurals and it will be interesting to see her take in a different genre. All of the Netflix/Marvel series has a unique color palette that allows their directors to take some interesting chances.

As a visual artist, Lucy Liu has plenty of experiences working with a camera. While she’s been known for her painting and collage talents, she has also had galleries for photography. Just being able to capture beautiful pictures should inspire confidence for her work in “Soul Brother #1.”

Coker is the writer for the premiere but also the showrunner and creator of Luke Cage. His decision to work with Lucy Liu means he sees something unique about her directing style.

Nailing the first episode of season 2 will help Liu secure more gigs within Marvel Television. It would be nice to see her do an episode for Jessica Jones, as yet another successful female director.  Her years in front of the camera where she’s played strong female characters make her a perfect fit for other series.

Jessica Jones and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have both expressed a desire to hire more women to direct. The problem is finding directors early in their career who understand how to shoot stunt work. Lucy Liu has had plenty of experience with choreographed fight sequences that would offer style to filming fast-paced scenes.

Fans will have to wait another thirteen weeks to see how Liu handles “Soul Brother #1”. The second season premiere doesn’t hit Netflix until June 22. In the meantime, be sure to rewatch Luke Cage season one or the other Marvel Defenders shows.
