Starring Amy Adams, Sharp Objects is a dark drama about an unstable reporter freshly released from a psychiatric ward returning to her home in small-town America to investigate the murder of 2 young girls.

Returning home stirs up ghosts from the lead’s past and makes her confront the issues that lead her to a life of self-harm. Tense family relationships are explored in Sharp Objects, making it clear that Adam’s character, Camille, isn’t the only one in her line suffering from instability.

Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn ( writer of the best seller Gone Girl), the 8 episode series is set to be released this July on HBO and is being produced by BlumHouse Productions and Entertainment one. This is the third adaptation of Flynn’s works, however, Sharp Objects was actually her debut novel.

More from HBO

BlumHouse is best known for horror series like The Purge and Paranormal Activity, though in recent years it seems the studio is aiming higher, with less focus on masked mayhem and more on psychological fare like Get Out and M. Night Shyamalan’s film Split.

Sharp Objects seems a natural choice in Blumhouse’s progression into more highbrow suspense, with the first look at the teaser being both compelling and creepy, without the presence of the usual horror movie tropes. The most frightening ghosts aren’t lurking in the closets and under the bed, instead, they reside inside your head.

This HBO adaptation has generated a lot of positive buzz, with many excited to see Amy Adams return to television. She will also serve as an executive producer on the series, setting up Sharp Objects to be another hit for the network. Based off of the HBO Twitter account, this mystery thriller is going to be even darker than last summer’s Big Little Lies but just as captivating.
