Watchmen on HBO: Damon Lindelof pens open letter to the fans

HBO is bringing a new version of Watchmen to fans of the DC Comics property.

The news that Watchmen is coming to HBO is not new as Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) is bringing the series to the premium cable service. After reading recent casting breakdowns for the show and the news that it isn’t a straight adaptation, fans wondered what to expect.

Damon Lindelof has chosen to let the fans know exactly what to expect from the Watchmen HBO series through an open letter he posted on Instagram.

More from HBO

In the open letter, Lindelof described himself as the “unscrupulous bastard currently defiling something you love” by remaking Watchmen for HBO. That was just the first part of a five-page letter to the fans.

Of course, this isn’t the first time someone adapted Watchmen as Zack Snyder did a very faithful version as a movie already.

However, when fans hear that Lindelof was changing the story, they panicked and set out to rip the showrunner for something they hadn’t even seen yet.

According to Lindelof, he does not plan to remake the original comic book series into a TV series. Instead, he promised that the original comics will not be “recreated,” “recreated,” “rebooted,’ “reproduced” or be a “retread” of the comics.

With that said, Lindelof said that the Watchmen HBO series will take place in the same world as the original comics but will feature new characters, new faces, and new masks. However, he did hint that there would be a familiar face in the TV show that audiences will see the “past century of Costumed Adventuring through.”

Lindelof also gave the analogy that the comic book series (and the original movie) was the “Old Testament” and his Watchmen HBO series will be the “New Testament.” In the world of the TV show, The Comedian died, Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left after the death of Rorschach.

With that said, Lindelof promised a wholly original and new series when it comes to his Watchmen. He also told the story of how he discovered Watchmen as a child and how he was offered chances to adapt it before, and denied it every time until now.

Lindelof said that he is a true fan of Watchmen — just like those who hate him now for adapting it. But he promises all fans that his Watchmen will use the comics as canon and then tell his own story in that world.

With respect.
