Joss Whedon is heading back to television with his new series, The Nevers.

Deadline is reporting HBO has officially nabbed the highly anticipated new series from Whedon despite many networks expressing interest. The Nevers marks Whedon’s return to television since the first season of Agents of SHIELD and his short-lived cult favorite, Dollhouse.

Unlike the Marvel series, Whedon will have a more hands-on role with the HBO show. He’ll be serving as an executive producer, showrunner, director, and writer for the series. His presence will definitely excite long-time Whedon fans since he was similarly involved in fan favorites Buffy the Vampire SlayerAngel, and Firefly.

More from HBO

The Nevers sounds like it will be closer to a historical Buffy than Firefly despite being described as an “epic science fiction drama”. HBO announced the show would follow a group of Victorian women who develop a set of unique powers but must face unrelenting enemies. While they fight these new evils, the women will be on a quest to save the world.

Setting it in the Victorian era means the women will also have to deal with various forms of discrimination. Whedon has always had a gift for writing strong and empowered women, which makes the possibilities for this series so exciting.

Casey Bloys, the President of Programming at HBO, had only positive things to say about the new project.

"“We have long been fans of the incredibly talented and prolific Joss Whedon and we can’t think of a better project than The Nevers with which to welcome him to the HBO family. We look forward to meeting the strange, multifaceted characters of THE NEVERS, to learn their stories, see them in action and share them with our viewers. We’re honored that Joss chose HBO as the place to build his ambitious new world and we are excited to get started.”"

This latest drama could also be in the running to be the next major program for HBO when Game of Thrones ends. Whedon himself also seems excited to craft an entirely new world of his own rather than working within someone else’s.

"“I honestly couldn’t be more excited. The Nevers is maybe the most ambitious narrative I’ve created, and I can’t imagine a better home for it than HBO. Not only are they the masters of cinematic long-form, but their instant understanding of my odd, intimate epic was as emotional as it was incisive. It’s been too long since I created an entirely new fictional world, and the HBO team offer not just scope and experience, not just ‘prestige,’ but a passionate collaboration. I could go on, but – I’m impatiently grateful to say – I have work to do.”"

Ultimately, The Nevers has a lot of potential to be a major hit for HBO. The network has also ordered a sci-fi epic from JJ Abrams as well, in a new push for genre shows. While the series has yet to cast anyone, fans can probably expect to see some of the usual Whedon suspects join the drama.
