Emma Roberts will star in new Netflix figure skating series
Emma Roberts, best known for starring in multiple seasons of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story, is set to lead Spinning Out, a new drama at Netflix set in the world of competitive figure skating.
In the series, Emma Roberts will play Kat Baker, a high-level singles skater who must give up on her Olympic dreams after a terrible fall makes continuing her skating career impossible. That is until she sees an opportunity to keep competing as a pair skater with a skilled but dangerous partner, a move that risks exposing a closely guarded, life-altering secret. The duo will face staggering odds, including physical and emotional torment, to make their competitive dreams come true.
Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of Spinning Out. The show was created by Samantha Stratton (Mr. Mercedes) who, as a former competitive figure skater herself, knows about the world she’s creating. Stratton will executive produce and serve as showrunner along with Lara Olson (Reign, Beauty and the Beast).
Figure skating stories are often few and far between in movies and TV given the technical challenges of shooting them and the rarefied atmosphere the sport often invokes. However, the success of the movie I, Tonya, which netted multiple award nominations last year, demonstrated that a gritty story in the world of figure skating could be embraced by audiences.
In addition, like other sports, the pressures, risks, heartbreak, and triumph that come with competitive figure skating could make for compelling TV. If the show produces an interesting story both on and off the ice, it could add up to a unique addition to Netflix’s ever-growing list of original series.
No additional casting has been announced yet. Stay tuned for more Spinning Out news as it comes in.
