Two favourites from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, are set to appear in a limited series on Disney’s streaming platform.

Here’s some good news for Marvel fans. After the recent cancellations of Netflix shows Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Variety has learned that a limited series featuring Falcon and the Winter Soldier is in the works at the Disney streaming service. Though no official statement has been released by either Marvel Studios or Disney, the series is said to be written by Empire writer Malcolm Spellman.

This report follows Disney’s recent announcement that it will be producing several shows starring Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, including Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. Sam Wilson/ Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/ Winter Solder (Sebastian Stan) are integral characters from the Captain America trilogy and have also featured in the wider MCU franchise, most recently in Avengers: Infinity War.

The two characters won the hearts of fans through their hilarious interactions in Captain America: Civil War. I, for one, would love to see them star in a buddy-cop comedy especially since the two of them epitomize two distinct aspects of their friend Steve Rogers’ life. One can expect high-octane action and plenty of banter between the characters. Could a Chris Evans cameo also be in the works?

Under the direction of Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, the MCU mini-series are a great way for Marvel to prolong the life of many characters who are on their last legs in the main franchise. While fans expect to see much more of both Falcon and Winter Soldier in the MCU films – irrespective of how Infinity War ended – we are unlikely to hear any complaints about an additional outing on the Disney platform for the iconic characters. Mackie and Stan seem to enjoy these roles as well, so let’s hope this series definitely comes to fruition.

The Disney streaming platform, which will become available in late 2019, appears to be Marvel’s response to DC Comics’ DC Universe, and will feature new, original content, as well as old Disney favourites.
