Luke Cage: Netflix cancels Marvel show in shocking move

Luke Cage has officially been canceled by Netflix.

Despite it’s critically and publically beloved second season, the streaming service has decided to ax the planned third season of Luke Cage. Deadline reports creative differences behind the scenes ultimately led to the demise of the show. However, this is a rough blow for Marvel fans, since Netflix also canceled Iron Fist last week.

Both Marvel and Netflix released a joint statement as they did for Iron Fist. Unfortunately, not much is revealed from the comment which is predictably very civil.

"“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”"

However, Deadline is reporting that tensions had risen between the writer’s room, Marvel, and Netflix. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker had assembled his team of writers and they had been working on scripts for the past six months. This led many to believe that Luke Cage season 3 was a done deal.

The publication reveals that everything went south over these past forty-eight hours. Apparently, not everyone was happy with the scripts despite attempts to appease all parties these past few months.

It’s also reported that Disney and Netflix could not reach a new agreement for the series. The third season was going to have a trimmed down episode count as Iron Fist did in its sophomore run. Apparently, money was a factor for Netflix, who didn’t see as much incentive to continue such a high-cost show when they have other buzzy originals.

This does raise the question of whether the remaining Marvel/Netflix shows will be safe from cancellation. Daredevil just debuted its third season, while both Jessica Jones and Punisher are currently filming their new episodes. It seems unlikely the former will get the ax however the latter two will need to overperform if they want to stay on the streaming service.

According to reports, Disney streaming is not currently in discussions to revive the Hero of Harlem.  While fans are still holding out hope for  Heroes for Hire and Daughters of the Dragon spin-offs, it’s unclear if either is on the table.
