The One: Sci-Fi drama is coming to Netflix
Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of the drama series The One, an adaptation of John Marrs’ sci-fi novel of the same name.
The One, which is created and written by Howard Overman (Future Man, Merlin), imagines a near-future in which a DNA test can help people find their perfect romantic match. The test identifies the person an individual should fall passionately in love with, based on their genetics. The story will explore what happens when people are given the opportunity to find someone who might suit them better than the person they currently have a relationship with.
The series sounds like a fascinating mix of sci-fi and romance, enabling it to ask heady questions about the choices we make, how much of our lives are dictated by our genetics, and how scientific progress could wreak havoc on traditional family ties.
The One also appears to be a good fit for Netflix, which has recently had some success with original sci-fi dramas like Altered Carbon, Dark, and Black Mirror. It could be another stand-out series in the genre for the streaming platform.
The show, from StudioCanal, will be produced by Overman’s Urban Myth Films. The company’s Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy will serve as executive producers.
There is no word yet on casting, directors, or when production might begin, but keep it tuned to ShowSnob for more news on The One as it’s announced.
