The much-anticipated final season of Game of Thrones will return in April, and now we have an exact date!

Thronies, hold on to your swords – the Game of Thrones Season 8 premiere date has been announced. Cancel all your plans for April 14, 2019, because Game of Thrones will be hitting your television screens.

HBO announced the Game of Thrones Season 8 premiere date right before the True Detective Season 3 premiere Sunday night.

Back in November, HBO dangled the carrot, announcing that the mega-hit fantasy drama would return in April 2019. But they made fans wait a wee bit longer for the actual date.

Why did HBO wait so long to announce the Game of Thrones Season 8 premiere date?

I have a feeling it has a lot to do with cross-promoting True Detective, getting people to stick around on the channel to watch it, after such dismal and panned Season 2.

Anything that has anything to do with Game of Thrones garners a ton of attention, especially since fans are foaming at the mouth for any news on the show.

Hopefully, True Detective, which now stars Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, will return to its first season roots. Ali will star as Wayne Hays, a police detective in 1980 investigating a missing children case.

So, it seems as though it was a smart move linking Game of Thrones up with True Detective.

As for Game of Thrones and what we can expect? HBO CEO Richard Phepler says, “It’s a spectacle.” According to Variety, he said,

"“The guys have done six movies. The reaction I had while watching them was ‘I’m watching a movie. [David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] knew the bar was high. They’ve exceeded the bar. I’ve watched them twice without any CGI, and I’m in awe. Everybody’s in for an extraordinary treat of storytelling and of magical, magical production.”"

And if fans still dread the ending of this monumental series, there are still prequel spinoffs to come. And eventually, some novels, whenever George R. R. Martin finishes them.
