Netflix picks up Greek mythology anime Gods & Heroes
Netflix has ordered the Greek mythology anime series Gods & Heroes by the creators of Death Note and starring Jason O’Mara.
Gods & Heroes, created by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides (Death Note) has been picked up at Netflix for eight episodes.
The series is set in the world of Greek mythology but will be a completely original story about Zeus’s illegitimate son (and he has plenty of those!) who is tasked with the mission of saving heaven and earth as a vengeful goddess tries to stop him.
In addition to Jason O’Mara, the voice cast will include Mamie Gummer, Chris Diamantopoulos, Derek Phillips, Jessica Henwick, Melina Kanakaredes, Claudia Christian and Elias Toufexis.

The Parlapanides are well known as the creators of such shows like Death Note (the live action version, not the original anime series) and Immortals, an epic tale set in the world of Greek mythology.
According to Netflix director of anime John Derderian, the Parlapanides “have an outstanding track record of telling gripping stories set in fantastical worlds and we are thrilled to bring their unique vision for the Gods of Mount Olympus to Netflix members around the world.”
At the very least they have experience telling exciting and creative tales related to Greek mythology but not necessarily adhering to known myths. I am most curious to know who this illegitimate son of Zeus will turn out to be.
Will he be a character pulled from the mythology or will he be an original character invented for the series? My guess is that it will be an original character because Zeus’s mortal sons – Hercules and Perseus – are pretty high profile characters that you would presumably include in the series announcement.
Netflix continues to expand it’s anime collection, investing in more unique and unusual series like Gods & Heroes. Parlapanides said in a statement to Deadline:
"“We are thankful for such an amazing cast and for such great creative partners at Netflix and Powerhouse Animation, who continue to push the envelope and expand the anime genre in a manner we had only dreamed of.”"
While the brothers will write and executive produce the series, Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania) will be leading animation development and creation.
