Supernatural stars announce season 15 will be the Winchester’s last
In the over 300 episode history of Supernatural, the inconceivable has finally happened. The series stars have announced that season 15 will be the fan favorite’s last.
As increasingly unlikely as Supernatural’s annual renewal has become, to fans of the unconventional family drama it’s seemingly guaranteed return has become a fond joke. The series has just celebrated its 300th episode, and now going into season 15 makes it the longest running sci-fi series in American television history (the record previously held by Stargate SG-1). And while Supernatural is still going strong as far as ratings go, the series stars have announced via an Instagram video that season 15 will be the Winchester’s last.
Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins made the announcement in a somewhat somber video, thanking fans for their years of loyalty. On behalf of creator Robert Kripke, Ackles stated that:
"“…in a show about family it is amazing and it has been the pride if his life that it became family.”"
While Ackles and Collins made the bulk of the announcement in a restrained yet genuine manner, Padalecki seems to be struggling with his emotions during the video but is able to manage a few echoed words of support. Ackles jokes that Padalecki “is hanging on for dear life” and that they promised not to get emotional.

Of course, it is partly the love the cast and crew have for the show and for each other that endears fans to the series. Knowing that the actors who play the brothers Winchester are like brothers in real life make us feel like we’re watching something real and special. Seeing how emotional they are to announce the end of an era, that makes us love the show even more. The finish has been a long time coming though, as Ackles and Padalecki have both stated that they have families at home that they want to spend more time with. A concession has been made for this in the past as evidenced by season 14’s shorter episode run.

But this might not be the last we hear of the Winchesters. Ackles cryptically teases in the caption for the announcement video,
"“Though nothing ever really ends in Supernatural…does it?”"
We might not get further seasons, but perhaps a holiday special or spinoff?
