One Of Us Is Lying: NBCU streaming orders YA mystery pilot

NBCU streaming adds the first pilot to its growing roster of shows with the One Of Us Is Lying order.

Everyone is trying to get in on the streaming game and NBCU is beginning to bolster the shows they’re able to offer viewers. Deadline reports the streaming service has ordered a pilot for the popular YA novel, One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus.

Likened to the Breakfast Club with murder, One Of Us Is Lying is the first novel from McManus and a resounding success. The book sat at the top of the New York Times bestseller list for 79 weeks and won multiple awards. It became a breakout story when it debuted in 2017 and only seemed like a matter of time before a network chose to adapt it.

The novel follows a group of students who are implicated in the death of a classmate when five of them attend detention but only four walk out. In the novel, the four characters all have their own unique perspectives and the story is told through their eyes. With the popularity of Riverdale, Veronica Mars, Pretty Little Liars, and 13 Reasons Why, the YA crime genre has become must-see television.

One Of Us Is Lying is the first official pilot order from NBCU after originally set to head to the E! Network. It joins Brave New World, the USA Network series which ended up heading to the streamer, the Queer as Folk reboot, and AP Bio. Some of the other NBC hits are also expected to be available for streaming, such as The Office, when the contract with Netflix officially comes to an end.

The pilot will be written by Erica Saleh (Instinct & Wisdom of the Crowd) and UCP is one of the studios in charge of the adaptation. The studio has had some big hits recently with The Umbrella Academy, The Act, and Homecoming.
