Coming off a strong performance in the Emmy-winning Fleabag, “hot priest” Andrew Scott is set to star in the Showtime series Ripley.

Andrew Scott is at it again. The actor, who has become best known for roles in Sherlock and Fleabag, is set to star in the new Showtime series Ripley.

The show will be based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling novels that follow Tom Ripley (Scott), who is hired by a wealthy man to find his son and convince him to return home. This puts him on a journey that leads down a dark path.

The series is set in the 1960s, and if renewed for multiple seasons, will use Highsmith’s five novels to tell the story: The Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley Under Ground, Ripley’s Game, The Boy Who Followed Ripley and Ripley Underwater. Those that aren’t familiar with the books might have heard of the 1999 film The Talented Mr. Ripley starring Matt Damon.

The combination of lead actor Andrew Scott and Steve Zaillian, who will write and direct the eight-episode first season, should produce compelling content.

Scott received significant praise for his role in Fleabag, which won best comedy series at the Emmy’s. Back in 2012, he won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Moriarty in Sherlock. Scott’s ability to play dark and complicated characters should make him a perfect fit for the role. He will also serve as a producer on the show.

Zaillian (Schindlers’s List, The Night Of) is an Oscar and Golden Globe winner whose past work seems to make him well suited for a story like this.

It is not yet clear when the show will start filming or when it will hit television screens.
