Fleabag: Amazon Studios executive an “optimist” regarding a third season

Fleabag writer and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge has said there won’t be a season three, but could there be reason to hope for more of the show?

Despite Fleabag writer and lead actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge telling the BBC there won’t be a season three, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salker is keeping the door open.

“I dream of wiggle room,” Salker said regarding Waller-Bridge’s comments, according to a report from Deadline. “Anything Phoebe wants to do, nothing would make us happier to bring another season of her show. Anything she wants to do. I’m forever the optimist.”

Is it realistic that Fleabag could return, or is this simply a pipe dream for Amazon born from season two’s incredible reception? Here’s some background on the “will she, won’t she?” roller coaster regarding whether the show will return.

After season one of Fleabag, Waller-Bridge was initially against doing a season two of the show. But after some time away from Fleabag, she eventually found inspiration for a second season and decided to make it happen. The second installment was released May 17th, almost three years after season one debuted.

Although Waller-Bridge announced season two would be the show’s final season, she initially seemed to be open to changing her mind again. “I may be surprised again,” she said regarding whether season two would REALLY be the final season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

More recently, however, she made a firmer statement indicating the show REALLY is done. “I have thought about it and there isn’t going to be one,” she told the BBC in March. “This is it – this is the final curtain…And yes, I did say that last time.”

So what should one make from all this? The Amazon Studios head’s optimism is likely nothing more than that: optimism. I don’t think she has any “secret insight” into why a season three might happen.

Regarding Waller-Bridge’s comments, she might have changed her mind once before, but it seems like she will be less likely to do so this time around.

Lastly, from a plot perspective, it makes much more sense to end the show after season two compared to season one. The first season ends with a significant reveal, and it would have felt strange if there wasn’t a second season to explore this further. Additionally, the first season ends on a fairly somber note, and character progression building towards a more optimistic ending felt desirable.

Season two accomplishes all of this, and although there’s surely more that could be explored in a season three, it doesn’t feel quite as crucial.

Fleabag fans can join Amazon Studios executives in dreaming for a season three, but it feels increasingly unlikely. Instead, fans should turn their attention towards Waller-Bridge’s new projects. Based on her track record, these will surely be worth watching.
