Upcoming Netflix fantasy series The Witcher has a new trailer, and will premiere in time for Christmas!

According to Deadline, The Witcher Season 1 is set to premiere on December 20th, 2019. Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series, The Witcher will star Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, who lives in a world also populated with elves, gnomes, and other assorted monsters.
Here’s the trailer!

Facts about The Witcher

The upcoming series was created by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and will be 8 episodes long. According to Hissrich on Twitter, Sapkowski will actually be a creative consultant for the series.
In addition to Cavill, The Witcher will feature Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Jodhi May as Queen Calanthe, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson as King Eist Tuirseach, Adam Levy as Mousesack, MyAnna Buring as Tissaia de Vries, Mimi Ndiweni as Fringilla Vigo, Therica Wilson-Read as Sabrina Glevissig and Emma Appleton as Princess Renfri.  Alik Sakharov will be involved as a director and Andrew Laws is the production designer.

Is it just a Game of Thrones “wannabe”?

With the incredible success of Game of Thrones, it’s no mystery why some networks would want to create a similar fantasy series. In addition to being a compelling drama, it makes solid business sense. However, those dismissing The Witcher as just a Game of Thrones wannabe or rip off should consider some very straightforward facts: Regardless of what one thinks of either franchise, George R. R. Martin’s A Game of Thrones novel was released on August 1, 1996, while Sapkowski’s The Witcher series harks back all the way to the mid-1980s!

Yes, the first short story, Wiedźmin, was published in Polish magazine Fantastyka in 1986. It has also become a video game series, predictably also titled The Witcher. The original game was developed by CD Projekt Red for Atari (Windows) and CD Projekt (OS X).  In other words, one may have a preference for either (or neither), but would be incorrect in accusing Sapkowski or the Netflix series of inherently ripping off George R. R. Martin (or, by logical extension, HBO).  Chances are, this series will have elements unique to itself.  Would it really need to be a clone of GoT anyway?
