HBO has shown a knack for treating historic events like with the care they deserve. They did with Chernobyl, and now with the new Perry Mason.

There haven’t been a lot of shows that have done Perry Mason with a lot of justice. Fortunately, the legendary attorney is finally in good hands with HBO.

Over the weekend, the cable network dropped the first look at the limited series, and it looks to be quite riveting. The series is set in 1931 Los Angeles, a city that is the very definition of the wild west. Matthew Rhys will play Mason, a legendary criminal attorney that doesn’t have the most sterling of moral records. As he sets about getting the truth in a city that tries its best to hide it, a pathway to personal redemption may be presented to him.

While the HBO version of Perry Mason will look darn good, I have an inkling that it won’t be nearly on the same eyeballing, edge-of-your-seat masterpiece that was Chernobyl. Then again, what other HBO shows can really stack up to that historical piece-of-art?

That’s not to say that Perry Mason can try its best to do that, but no one is asking this show to be on the same level as Chernobyl. The series can only fly in its own lane, and from the first look, it appears it is committed to doing just that. In fact, both Perry Mason and Chernobyl do share one thing in common — HBO has treated the history of both with the utmost care they deserve.

Next. Chernobyl: Breaking down fact vs. fiction in the HBO series. dark

Yes, Chernobyl was real and Perry Mason is fictional, I get that, but the historical nature of Perry Mason is well-rooted in television history, and that has to be treated on the same grounds as historical events.

Thankfully, HBO is doing just that.

Perry Mason will debut on HBO in early 2020.
