Perry Mason, HBO’s upcoming limited series from Team Downey starring Matthew Rhys in the title role, has cast Tatiana Maslany as a series lead.

Tatiana Maslany will play Sister Alice on Perry Mason, the leader of the Radiant Assembly of God, reports Deadline. Sister Alice preaches three sermons a day to both a live congregation and a nationwide radio audience. Given the attention her sermons attract, Sister Alice has great power. It remains to be seen how she will wield it.

It’s unclear how Maslany’s character will become involved in the case Rhys’ Perry Mason, a struggling private investigator haunted by his war experiences and broken marriage will be investigating.

The series is set in Los Angeles in 1932. While the rest of the country is still struggling to recover from the Great Depression, Los Angeles is thriving. Amidst an oil boom, the Olympics, and the growing motion picture business, a child kidnapping goes very wrong. When Mason gets drawn into the case, his search for answers reveals the city’s seedy underbelly while possibly representing his own redemption.

Series showrunners Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald will write Perry Mason and Tim Van Patten will direct. All three will serve as executive producers alongside Team Downey’s Robert and Susan Downey, who developed the show, and others.

Maslany won an Emmy in 2016 for her role as multiple clones in Orphan Black. She still remains best known for that show but has been busy since the series ended in 2017. She appeared in the movie Destroyer opposite Nicole Kidman and will soon star in Pink Wall with Jay Duplass. Currently, she’s treading the boards in Network, her Broadway debut.

Maslany is adored by fans for her characters on Orphan Black, all of whom she managed to make different, specific, and compelling.  While Perry Mason won’t require the same feat of acting as playing four clones in one scene, Maslany’s role sounds complex and interesting. It’s just the sort of multifaceted character that her considerable talents will bring to life in the most fascinating ways. Besides, it’ll be good to have Maslany back on our TV screens.
