Spinning Out showcases the competitive world of figure skating.

The first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming dramaSpinning Out, promises to be an entertaining ride. It’s full of a lot of heart, action, and angst as it follows figure skater, Kat Baker, as she tries to follow her Olympic dreams. Of course, the road won’t be easy and Kat has plenty of obstacles she’s going to need to face.

Kaya Scodelario (SkinsThe Maze Runner series) stars as Kat as she tries to fulfill her goals. The series picks up after a fall threatens to end her figure skating career but she tries to bounce back with Justin Davis (Evan Roderick), her new “bad-boy” partner. If she doesn’t have enough stress and pressure on the ice, Kat also works as a waitress in a small town.

January Jones (Mad Men) also stars as Kat’s mother Carol and seems to be channeling Allison Janney in I, Tonya for the role. In fact, Spinning Out actually references the real-life Tonya Harding incident in the trailer. Carol is a single mother and former skater, who puts an immense amount of pressure on Kat to continue skating. Willow Shields (The Hunger Games) plays Kat’s younger sister Serena as well.

Sarah Stratton of Mr. Mercedes created the series and she serves as an executive producer and showrunner alongside Lara Olsen. Stratton is also a former figure skater, which will help keep the show more grounded when telling the story of competitive skating. The show will be available for streaming on Netflix starting January 1.
