Disney Plus is rumored to be developing a Doogie Howser M.D. reboot with a half-Asian, half-white female lead who works in Hawaii.

According to a new report from Variety, Disney Plus is currently in the process of developing a reboot of Doogie Howser M.D. featuring a female lead. The original show starred Neil Patrick Harris as a young physician who struggled to find a balance between puberty and his skillset.

The project is currently being developed under the title “Doogie Kealoha, M.D.” It will star a half-Asian, half-white, 16-year-old lead character who works in Hawaii as a doctor.

The article says that Harris is not currently attached to the project in any way, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he wound up making a cameo appearance or working on the show in some capacity.

One of the reasons for that is because one of the executive producers attached to the project served as an executive producer and writer for Harris’ former long-running sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.

Kourtney Kang, Melvin Mar, and Jake Kasdan are developing the series. The trio also worked together on ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat.

Dayna and Jesse Bochco will also serve as executive producers alongside Kang, Mar, and Kasdan. Dayna and Jesse are the wife and son of Steve Bochco, who was a co-creator of the original Doogie Howser co-creators.

Disney has not officially commented on this news yet but it wouldn’t be surprising considering almost every single project in development at Disney Plus is a reboot, revival, or sequel of another property.
