Belgravia Season 1, Episode 2 recap: Anne tells Caroline the truth
By Mads Lennon
A cruel game begins between Anne and Caroline after Anne reveals the truth about Sophia and Edmund’s son, Charles, in episode 2 of Belgravia.
Belgravia begins its second episode in a flashback focused on Anne shortly after Sophia gave birth and subsequently passed away.
We see that Anne wanted nothing to do with the baby. It’s understandable, considering she already knew that another family would adopt him. Why add to the pain by bonding with the child only to have it taken from her?
Back in present Belgravia, James realizes that Anne has spent the entire evening in her dour reminiscing. She’s formulating a plan, one that he isn’t going to approve of, not that Anne gives him any inkling of that.
Anne corresponds with Caroline by letter to set up a meeting where she can divulge the truth. Unlike the cozy chitchat, we saw at the Duchess’s afternoon tea, the two women soon have their claws out.

Caroline is fine with the idea of Sophia and her late son having a secret love child if they were acting like foolish children caught up in the heat of the moment. But when Anne gives her the ugly truth — that Lord Bellasis bamboozled Sophia with a fake clergyman to get her into bed, Caroline’s civility goes out the window.
She doesn’t want her son’s reputation disgraced and instead accuses Sophia of being a harlot who seduced Edmund to try and get a wedding of status beyond her poor father’s wildest dreams.
But Anne has the receipts! She learned that Edmund’s godfather, Lord Berkeley, pulled a similar stunt in the past. Berkeley could probably have taught Edmund a thing or two about how to con women.
Needless to say, Anne and Caroline’s tête-à-tête doesn’t end with the women on good terms.
