Belgravia Season 1, Episode 3 recap: 5 important developments
By Mads Lennon
In episode 3 of Belgravia, Susan and John begin an affair, and more people become suspicious of Charles’ continued presence in high society.
The third episode of Epix and ITV’s historic drama Belgravia amps up the tension as two characters begin an illicit affair, and multiple people become invested in discovering the truth about Charles Pope.
When the Countess of Brockenhurst chooses to invest in Charles’ business, it puts everyone on high alert as to why on earth, anyone would be spending money on this seemingly random middle-class businessman. The following list documents the most important developments from the episode.
5. John Bellasis and Susan Trenchard begin having an affair.
After exchanging steamy looks and flirtatious banter at the Brocklehurst shindig last week, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that John and Susan begin sleeping together in this episode.
First, they meet up at Kensington Gardens, and then at John’s secret house, he probably keeps stashed away for circumstances such as these. The two sleep together, and Susan makes it clear she’s interested in continuing the liaison. It helps she has her loyal maid, Speer, on her side. Speer even goes so far as to come up with hard evidence, so Susan has a solid alibi for her husband.

I have a feeling John is going to get Susan pregnant. Supposedly, Susan cannot get pregnant, or so she’s been led to believe. But back then, it was always thought the woman’s fault when a woman couldn’t conceive. Oliver could be infertile.
John enticed Susan at Lady Caroline’s party, but it isn’t until she learns he is the Earl’s heir that she becomes more interested in pursuing him. She is dreadfully bored by her life at the Trenchards. They aren’t exactly at the pinnacle of high society, and Susan craves the life of a society lady.
My question is, does Susan intend to divorce Oliver and marry John? Or is she content with being his mistress? I would think divorce would be out of the question, especially when John is promised to Lady Maria Grey.
