Lizzie McGuire: Could a Younger spin-off replace the reboot?

A Younger spin-off focused on Hilary Duff’s character Kelsey Peters is currently in development. Could it potentially replace the Lizzie McGuire reboot?

It looks like Hilary Duff might be working on another television show, and it’s not the highly-anticipated Lizzie McGuire reboot that is on hiatus. Instead, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that a Younger spin-off is in the works revolving around Duff’s character Kelsey Peters.

With production on Lizzie McGuire currently halted, If this new series moves forward, it is possible the reboot could be scrapped. Duff and creator Terri Minsky have been outspoken about wanting to focus on a Lizzie in her 30s, and that means utilizing some adult themes and content.

It seems that Disney is apprehensive about allowing a PG-13 or even R-rated Lizzie to stream on Disney Plus as they don’t want to alienate younger viewers.

However, Younger is already similar in tone to what an adult Lizzie series might look like, and if Kelsey gets a spin-off, it’s going to feel even more like a Lizzie McGuire revival, just with a different name. It might be a better way for Duff to tell stories without being trapped in the Disney box.

Of course,  another idea would be for Disney to send the Lizzie McGuire reboot to Hulu, where they can have more adult content.

That has already happened with one proposed spin-off — Love, Victor, which comes from the Love, Simon franchise. Love, Victor reportedly migrated to Hulu due to underage drinking that Disney Plus did not want on their streaming service.

It looks like Disney Plus is hoping to attract a new generation to Lizzie McGuire, but it doesn’t make much sense when the people who grew up with Lizzie are now older and more likely to tune in to content that is geared toward their age group.

That said, it is still much too early to tell since the Younger spin-off has only been proposed, and no scripts have formally been ordered. It is also not clear where the show might air, as ViacomCBS might look to shop it to a streaming service like Netflix, which is what they’re currently doing with the Lily Collins-led series Emily in Paris.
