Percy Jackson series in development at Disney Plus with Rick Riordan
By Mads Lennon
Rick Riordan announced today that he would be working alongside Disney Plus to bring a high-quality Percy Jackson series to life on the streaming service.
Some good news for fans of Rick Riordan’s successful Percy Jackson series, a television show is now currently in development at Disney Plus according to the author himself. Variety reports that Riordan made the announcement via a video shared to Twitter earlier today.
The best part about this surprising news is that Riordan promises he and his wife will be part of the process, meaning they will have some degree of creative control over the storytelling to ensure the series is high-quality and a good adaptation of the popular books.
Many fans were unhappy with the film adaptations of the story starring Logan Lerman, although Lerman’s acting was praised. Overall, fans did not feel the movies did the books justice. Hopefully, with Riordan involved, the Disney Plus series will be the retelling that fans deserve.

For those unfamiliar with the story, the Percy Jackson books follow a young boy named Percy who learns that he is actually a demigod and the son of a human mother and the Greek god Poseidon.
While Riordan added that he wasn’t able to say much about the series right now since it is so early in the developmental stage, he did add that it would start with the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, and slowly work through the remaining books.
Given the current television production shutdowns, it is unlikely that we will see the series premiere on the streaming service any time soon. I would assume the earliest date would be winter 2021 or sometime in 2022.
“We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original ‘Percy Jackson’ five-book series, starting with ‘The Lightning Thief’ in season one. Rest assured that Becky & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show,” said Riordan.
