A live-action adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls is in works

The CW is developing a new superhero show and no, it is not another Arrowverse or DC series this time but it is the Arrowverse godfather, Greg Berlanti, who is helming this live-action adaptation of one of our favorite 90s cartoons, The Powerpuff Girls.

According to Variety, this live-action adaptation would feature the adult versions of these three superheroes that we have seen kicking a** as kindergarten-aged kids in the animated series.

The Powerpuff Girls on Cartoon Network lasted for six seasons.

More from The CW

The original show was created by Craig McCracken and was broadcasted on Cartoon Network during November 1998 and March 2005.

The series lasted for a total of six seasons spanning across 78 episodes, where each episode was split into two parts. A rebooted series began on Cartoon Network in 2016 and has aired a total of 122 episodes across three seasons so far. The recent third season wrapped in June 2019.

The series is being created by Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars), Diablo Cody (Juno), Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions.

In this live-action adaptation, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup aren’t the kindergartner superheroes created by Professor Utonium anymore.

According to Variety, the trio “are now disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. As the world needs them more than ever now, will they agree to reunite and fight crime ever again?“

The series is likely to be set in the fictional city of Townsville, just like the original series.

Regnier and Cody will be writing the script and Cody will also be executive producing the show through Vita Vera Films and Berlanti Prods.’ Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden.

This won’t be the first time Cody and Berlanti have collaborated as they previously worked together on the single-cam adaptation of the British comedy show, Raised by Wolves.

The original, as well as the rebooted ‘The Powerpuff Girls’, is currently streaming on Hulu.
