The nominations for the Golden Globes 2021 were officially announced earlier this week to much fanfare, a mixture of both annoyance and happiness. Plenty of shows were snubbed, and at least one brand new show proved to be a glaring omission.

Disney Plus showed up for the Golden Globes with several nods for its Star Wars spin-off series The Mandalorian, but where was WandaVision on that list?

The series, which revolves around Wanda, a.k.a Scarlet Witch and Vision from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has received critical acclaim since its debut earlier this month.

But unfortunately, it was not released during the Golden Globes 2021 eligibility period. The cut-off date was on December 31, 2020, and WandaVision‘s first two episodes did not premiere until January 15, 2021.

More from Award Shows

Even though WandaVision might not receive any attention at this year’s Golden Globes, it could still be considered for other award shows coming up in 2021, such as the Primetime Emmy Awards. And it will be eligible for next year’s Golden Globes.

That said, just because audiences and critics alike both love WandaVision, that doesn’t mean it will receive awards recognition.

Because it is a Marvel show and within the superhero genre, there is a good, albeit unfortunate, chance that the series will be overlooked. The academy still has a nasty habit of ignoring genre shows.

However, The Mandalorian is the other main series on Disney Plus right now. It has consistently received nominations at the Emmy’s and Globes, despite being a sci-fi/fantasy series in the Star Wars universe, which could be a good sign for WandaVision‘s chances.

While it has become more popular for superhero films to make it into the award ceremony — such as Black Panther, The Dark Knight, and Joker — more often than not, these films are relegated to the technical categories more so than for performances.

On the other hand, the Golden Globes are notorious for having shocking snubs and surprises. This year’s nominations are no exception, with the universally acclaimed I May Destroy You getting overlooked while the mostly maligned Emily in Paris received two significant nominations. It’s hard to say what could happen, and next year’s ceremony is still a long way off.
