Emmys 2021: The Crown wins Outstanding Drama Series

The winner of the Outstanding Drama Series has been announced at the Emmys 2021. But before we get into the award winner, we’re going to highlight who was the favorite and discuss some of the nominees.

Since the nominations came out, it seemed likely that The Crown would be a shoo-in to win with its fourth nomination in this category and coming off a successful awards season with multiple actors winning awards.

Out of all of the shows nominated in this category this year, The Handmaid’s Tale is the only one to have won thus far. Pose picked up several Creative Arts Emmy Awards over the weekend and this year is the last it was eligible as the groundbreaking FX series recently wrapped its third and final season.

The Mandalorian was a dark horse contender for this category as a breakout success at Disney+. It seems to be filling the void left by Game of Thrones in terms of a big genre show, although it had some competition on that front this year with the addition of Lovecraft Country and The Boys.

Bridgerton being nominated was a surprise and appeared to show that the academy is becoming less snobby. A big part of its nomination is likely due to its unquestionable popularity. Finally, This Is Us always felt like a long shot as one of the only network shows nominated.

The Crown won multiple awards throughout the night so it wasn’t too surprising that the series nabbed the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. In addition to this big win, the show also picked up awards for directing and writing. Plus, stars Josh O’Connor, Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies swept the drama acting categories.
