Caution: The following article contains spoilers for Big Sky Season 1, Episode 9.
The latest episode of Big Sky finalized Rick Legarski’s storyline and saw Ronald escape into the wind (or interstate). It also functioned as a 45-minute advertisement for Tesla. If you weren’t aware, the ninth episode also serves as another midseason finale episode.
As noted by Decider, it’s too early to say when the series will return, but ABC claims it will start airing the rest of the season sometime this spring. Since the network ordered additional episodes, we still have at least seven more to go before the season finale. The back half of the season will likely follow the Kleinsasser family starring Britt Robertson, Michelle Forbes, and more.
For now, let’s focus on the most recent and last episode of the series we’ll see for a while. What happened in Big Sky Season 1, Episode 9?
Big Sky Season 1, Episode 9 recap: Merilee bludgeons Rick to death.
One of the most shocking moments of the hour, and the season overall, came when Merilee finally reached her breaking point with her husband. After reminiscing on their past life together, Merilee realizes that her husband intended to kill her that night he walked into their room wielding a hammer. She believes that Rick is faking his memory loss, and I’m inclined to agree.

Unable to fathom a possible future where Rick goes free after receiving hospital treatment as his defense attorney intends, Merilee brings the same hammer Rick once intended to kill her with and bludgeons him to death in his hospital bed. The episode’s final moments show the police escorting Merilee out of the hospital room in handcuffs, looking absolutely sanguine.
On the plus side, now she’ll probably have the help of Rick’s slimy attorney to help her. I can’t say I blame Merilee for her actions. At least one thing is for certain, and there’s no way Rick is coming back from the dead this time.
Big Sky Season 1, Episode 9 recap: Ronald escapes.
Ronald booby traps his house, rigging it with trap guns and a bomb set to blow when the cops swarm the premises. Jenny almost gets trapped in the inferno, trying to rescue what she thinks is an unconscious Erik. It turns out to be Helen trussed up to look like a little boy, so the rescue squad gets quite a shock when they find her frozen corpse tucked inside a blue hoodie outside.
The race is on to catch Ronald and Erik before Ronald does something desperate outside. Ronald conveniently hijacks the dead pastor’s Tesla (how does a pastor afford a Tesla?!) and takes off down the interstate. Jenny and Cassie catch up to the car but are horrified to discover the dead priest behind the wheel with a restrained Erik in the passenger’s seat. I guess it’s a good thing Ronald has all these dead bodies lying around to create tricks and schemes.
As the Tesla drives down the road, the officers realize that it’s on autopilot. Cassie skillfully maneuvers her truck in front of the car, and it comes to a halt just before a head-on collision. They save Erik and reunite him with his desperately worried mother, but Ronald escapes into the night.
The last we see of him, he’s driving down the freeway in his truck yet again, just the way we found him at the beginning of the season. Jenny and Cassie vow to hunt him down.
Big Sky Season 1 will return with new episodes this spring, and you can watch the first nine episodes on Hulu.
