Big Sky Season 1 just got a large extension from ABC. The season will now run for an additional six episodes instead of the originally planned ten.

ABC’s newest crime thriller series Big Sky just got an extended first season order. Big Sky Season 1 was originally planned to run for ten episodes, but according to TVLine, the network just ordered six additional episodes, bringing the total season count to 16.

Considering how slow-paced the last two episodes were, let’s hope that means the show has more planned regarding the plot, or things will get very stale, very quickly. That said, I have mostly been enjoying the series, particularly seeing Katheryn Winnick and Kylie Bunbury working together, so I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next.

More from ABC

Big Sky is based on the Highway quartet book series from C.J. Box, so I’m sure there are plenty more stories to tell from the books. Considering how light the fall television schedule has been due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s nice to see that at least one network show seems to have drummed enough viewers to garner more scripts and, hopefully, an eventual Season 2 renewal.

The publication reports that Big Sky has held a steady audience for the last two episodes and is currently performing better than its Fall 2019 timeslot occupant, Emergence, which was canceled after only one season.

I think what attracted a sizable audience to the series was the big twist at the end of the first episode. [SPOILER] If you haven’t watched it yet, turn back now. At the end of the first hour, we learned that State Trooper Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch) is actually one of the bad guys involved with the kidnapping plot alongside Ronald Pergman (Brian Geraghty). He shoots Cody Holt (Ryan Philippe) dead after ABC spent weeks building the show up to be Philippe’s leading vehicle.
