The Batman: Penguin reportedly receiving a HBO Max spinoff
According to Variety, the most recently announced spin-off television series based on The Batman movie from Matt Reeves will be about the Dark Knight’s iconic villain in Penguin. Since he will be portraying the stout and grouchy antagonist, Colin Farrell has been approached to star in this show.
At the time of writing, his appearance in the series is yet to be confirmed, and no agreement has been made. While this might be a misstep to announce a show without the actor who is already playing the lead character, I do not think it will be a major issue for the television series.
As alluded to by Variety and their sources, this Penguin series, still in early development, looks to be about the origins of Oswald Cobblebpot and depicts how he rose to such esteem and intimidation within Gotham. Because of this, I do not necessarily see the need for Farrell to be the main actor throughout the episodes. The majority of the story could easily show a young Cobblepot who has not yet reached his peak crime boss status.
Rumored Penguin series is not the only spinoff from The Batman movie
Before The Batman movie has even been released, it has already earned two spin-off series surrounding Matt Reeves’ version of the Caped Crusader. Last year DC Comics and Warner Bros. announced a cop procedural drama taking place during Batman’s first year.
The amount of trust and plans that DC Comics is putting into this revamped franchise is incredible. I am honestly not complaining, but given the historic inconsistency that the live-action DCEU has had, it is concerning about the quality of these television series.
The one saving grace of all these projects is that Warner Bros. has enough money to bring on some incredible performers. The likes of Robert Pattinson, Jeffery Wright, Zoë Kravitz, John Turturro, and Colin Farrell massively raise this movie’s status and the future of the franchise. But time has also shown that the best actors are not always able to rescue the worst scripts.
Only time will tell how this series plays into the universe that DC Comics and Warner Bros. are currently building.
