Emmys 2021: Gillian Anderson wins Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

The winner of the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series has been announced at the Emmys 2021. But before we get into the award winner, we’re going to highlight who was the favorite and discuss some of the nominees.
Gillian Anderson seemed like a surefire lock to win this particular award since the awards season began. She won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and the SAG Award for her turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown. Anderson previously won an Emmy Award 24 years ago, so this would be her second win.
Her biggest competition for this award was Yvonne Strahovski, who returned to the ballot for the first time since 2018 this year. Strahovski undoubtedly deserves an award for her excellent work on The Handmaid’s Tale. And speaking of the acclaimed Hulu drama, Ann Dowd, Madeline Brewer and Samira Wiley were also nominated in this category.
Also nominated from The Crown were Helena Bonham Carter and Emerald Fennell, but neither ever picked up as much steam as Anderson did. Additionally, Lovecraft Country star Aunjanue Ellis was also competing here. Yet again, this category was a tough one to win.
Emmys 2021: Gillian Anderson wins Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Gillian Anderson has won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in the acclaimed Netflix series The Crown.
The Crown has also won for Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Drama tonight. Anderson’s co-star Tobias Menzies also won for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Olivia Colman won for Lead Actress and Josh O’Connor won for Lead Actor. At the end of the night, The Crown won top honors with the Outstanding Drama Series Award.
