Emmys 2021: Olivia Colman wins Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
By Mads Lennon
The winner of the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series has been announced at the Emmys 2021. But before we get into the award winner, we’re going to highlight who was the favorite and discuss some of the nominees.
It has been an undeniably fantastic year for The Crown following one of its buzziest seasons yet. It seemed like a sure thing that either Emma Corrin or Olivia Colman would win for their work as Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II, respectively.
That said, MJ Rodriguez made history this year as the first transgender nominee in a leading acting category. As the groundbreaking series Pose is in its last award season run, she was a stellar standout in the show’s third and final season.
Also a dark horse contender was Uzo Aduba for her excellent work on the HBO reboot of In Treatment. Aduba has won several Emmy awards already for her work on Orange is the New Black and Mrs. America. Then there is Jurnee Smollett, who delivered a phenomenal performance in Lovecraft Country, which HBO, unfortunately, canceled after just one season despite it receiving 18 nominations.
Finally, we had Elisabeth Moss for her leading performance in The Handmaid’s Tale. She was the only actress in this category to have won it before back in the show’s first season.
