This is Us season 6: Kate and Toby will indeed break up

Look, this was the biggest heart punch of the season five finale because Toby Damon is one of the best written comedic relief characters in not only This is Us but also the best in contemporary and modern television. Regardless of whether the show’s creator and writing staff planned for having Chris Sullivan play such a large role in their show, Toby and his presence have become ingrained within the DNA of this series. This is why his relationship, marriage, and family building with the sole Pearson daughter has been such a beautiful and welcome development throughout the first five seasons of the show. The writers have been teasing a breakup along with Toby and Kate’s lack of compatibility at times, but that did not make the final reveal that Kate would be marrying her former boss any less impactful.

The flash forward to Kate marrying Phillip (played by Chris Geere) might be up there with one of the biggest reveals of the series, and that is saying a lot. What makes this whole thing interesting is that in the super flash forward to 2034 when everyone is meeting at Kevin’s house and we see Nicky at Rebecca’s bedside, Toby is indeed there celebrating with his (assuming) former in-laws. This obviously is common for former partners who become close with the respective families, and even more so when children are involved, but this all adds layers to the reasoning why Toby and Kate break up and get divorced in the first place. Who knows, maybe This is Us Season 6 will go full progressive and contemporary and have Kate, Toby, and Phillip in a throuple? Probably not, but imagine the social media response…
