The Last of Us fans won’t have to wait until Sunday, for episode 5 to air during its usual slot this week. The show will, instead, be airing days early on HBO and HBO Max platforms.

This is certainly good news for fans who were wondering whether they would have to choose between the Super Bowl LVII and the hit sci-fi drama show this Sunday. The Last of Us season 1 episode 5 is set to air on Friday, February 10 at 9PM ET or 6PM PT on HBO Max or HBO On Demand.

The show will then go on to air during its normal time slot again on Sunday, February 12 on HBO at 9PM ET/PT.

While HBO didn’t mention the Super Bowl when they were announcing the change of schedule following the fourth episode, the reason for the change appears quite obvious. They don’t want to compete with the huge game day.

The Super Bowl is an enormous ratings driver, and it would take away viewers from their current, extremely successful stats. It should be noted, that as of now, The Last of Us team has not announced any changes to the schedule for March 12, a day on which the show will coincide with the Oscars ceremony.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR EPISODE 4 – What happened on The Last of Us Episode 4?

At the end of season 1 episode 4, Joel and Ellie were trapped in Kansas City. Meanwhile, Kathleen, the leader of the revolutionary movement that had overthrown the military in their quarantine zone, is on a quest for vengeance against a man named Henry.

Henry and Sam are seen just before episode 4 closes. The next episode will probably see the continuation of this story, as Henry and Sam will likely try to avoid capture.
