If you haven't been able to get "Hiccups (Body Go Crazy)" out of your head since Adults season 2 premiered, then this one goes out to you. Perhaps the viral song has even helped grow the show's profile, as the FX/Hulu comedy series has marked a serious viewership improvement between seasons, and that's the best update we could possibly get about season 3.
According to Variety, Adults season 2 marked a 40% increase in its first 12 days of release across multi-platform viewing compared to the same timeframe for the first season. Disney didn't divulged the exact viewership numbers the series has brought in so far, but as it turns out, a lot of the viewership growth originated from outside the United States with global viewing surging by 100%.
Adults season 2 ratings increase is good news for season 3 hopes
In addition to Adults season 2 attracting a much bigger audience, new fans also appear to be tuning into the first season. Since the release of the prequel episode and new pilot "Marathon Day" in July, season 1's viewership jumped by 50%. We can surmise that figure continued to climb with new viewers starting their binge from the beginning to see what all the hype was about.
While Adults has received positive reception from critics (and should definitely be in the Emmy Awards conversation when the second season is eligible next year), we can likely point the show's increased ratings to word of mouth and natural virality. In a time when viral moments are being chased and fabricated, Adults manages to gain organic viral moments with creativity, talent, and real comedy.
Being compared to beloved shows like Friends and New Girl but actually being liked even more than those shows doesn't happen every day. Even beyond the comparisons and strong word of mouth that had been sweeping social media, Adults season 2 makes a massive case against the streaming era's sticky trigger finger, canceling comedies without giving them a chance to find themselves.
Hulu just canceled fellow young adult comedy Not Suitable For Work, and we can't help but wonder what could have been if the series had been granted a similar trajectory as Adults. Thankfully, we don't have to wonder with Adults. Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao, and Owen Thiele are on fire with comedic chemistry on and off screen that's just insanely watchable.
Adults became a better and stronger show in its second season, and that wouldn't have happened if FX and Hulu opted to cancel the show that might have "underperformed" based on certain metrics. And now that the series has more than established itself and its voice, the call from fans for a larger order than eight episodes doesn't seem like too big of an ask.
Last year, the network took about five months to announces the season 2 renewal, but with the momentum the series has been very clearly receiving, we shouldn't have to wait that long this time around for the Adults season 3 renewal. All things considered, it doesn't seem like a matter of "if" as much as "when." Hopefully, that announcement comes much sooner than later.
