Well, if you were hoping to return to Murray Hill and get the answers we had been waiting for after the Not Suitable for Work season 1 finale, our dreams have been dashed. Hulu made a big mistake.
Two months after the young adult comedy series wrapped its debut season, Hulu announced the show's cancellation, officially confirming our fears that season 2 wasn't going to happen. Following the season 1 finale, creator Mindy Kaling had revealed that the season 2 writer's room was in progress, but the show's rating obviously didn't meet Hulu's expectations for an official pickup.
While we can hypothesize that low viewership contributed to the cancellation of Not Suitable for Work, as Deadline suggest the show wasn't a "breakout," Hulu hasn't offered an exact reason why season 2 wasn't picked up. Thankfully, because the show was produced by Warner Bros. under Kaling's overall deal with the studio, there's still a bit of hope for the show's future.
Not Suitable for Work season 2 could find a new home
According to Variety, Warner Bros. intends to shop Not Suitable for Work to other potential streaming homes, which could include the likes of HBO Max and Netflix. Kaling notably already has a relationship with both streamers after having hit original series on both platforms, currently working with Netflix on the basketball comedy Running Point, which is returning for season 3.
Kaling also co-created and executive produced the young adult comedy series The Sex Lives of College Girls for HBO Max. Although the series was canceled after just three seasons, it's coming to Netflix for a second look at the end of August 2026, sharing space with Kaling's aforementioned Running Point and the writer's fan-favorite teen romantic comedy Never Have I Ever.
Both streamers are solid choices for Not Suitable for Work to potentially continue with a second season and beyond. Warner Bros. works with Netflix on a number of original series, and HBO Max is the official streaming home for the company. Prime Video isn't a natural fit, even with its extensive collection of original YA series, and Peacock tends to produce series from Universal Television.
Even with this glimmer of hope that Warner Bros. could lock down a new home for season 2, it's not a given that any of these streamers will swoop in and save the show. It's more of a gamble than ever to revive a show that another streaming service has canceled, but you never know. NSFW has enough buzz behind it to possibly have another streamer considering giving it a second shot.
Upon the show's cancellation, the cast shared tributes to the series on Instagram, with Kaling also sharing her own post commemorating the show. "I love this show, I loved making this show, I love these people, and I love all of you for all your sweet comments, messages, edits and for watching Not Suitable for Work," she wrote alongside a carousel of behind-the-scenes photos.
Not Suitable for Work had so much potential to become a hit for Hulu, given the strength of its writing led by Kaling and the excellent performances by the main cast. The show's proximity to similar young adult comedies, like HBO's I Love LA and FX/Hulu's Adults, was certainly unfortunate and could have been avoided to give NSFW a better chance to not only succeed by thrive.
Hopefully, another streaming service sees the mistake Hulu just made. Keep your fingers crossed for some positive updates on the fate of Not Suitable for Work.
