The rumored Glee reboot is officially happening!
Variety has officially announced that Ryan Murphy’s Glee, the musical-based show, will return on both Disney+ and Hulu. No new details about the show have been released. All we know is that 20th Television has acquired it, and the rebook will air on both Disney+ and Hulu.
The series premiered in 2009 and became a pop culture phenomenon. Over six seasons, it followed a group of high schoolers as they joined a Glee Club, along with the highs and lows of being a teenager in the early 2010s.
Glee is remembered for two things: its impressive vocal range, with the original cast covering classic songs like “Don’t Stop Believin’” and pop hits of the time like “Teenage Dream,” and its blunt comedic style. Much of what made Glee funny back then was its humor and the cast and crew's hilarious delivery. It’s an extremely binge-worthy show.
Glee also wasn’t afraid to tackle darker topics and go deeper into mental health issues at the time, along with hosting societal conversations less common in teen media. This often included sexuality, texting and driving, abuse, and much more.
The Glee reboot cast has not been confirmed
So far, no cast members have been announced for the reboot yet. We do know from a recent interview that Ryan Murphy did on Entertainment Tonight that he’s been in contact with several former cast members and that many seemed on board with the idea of returning to the world of Glee:
“I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
In that same interview, Murphy also said he and his collaborators, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, had just finished a script for a reboot. Those three wrote the first two seasons — which many believe are the best seasons of Glee.
To be honest, those seasons also have some of the best Glee covers, so it wouldn't be that shocking if several of the original cast members came back for this reboot. Maybe some of them became teachers at the school years later; who really knows?
The original cast had a slew of names that became stars after the show premiered, including Lea Michelle, Darren Criss, Jane Lynch, and more. Michelle, who was often considered the star of the show, also opened up recently about the potential to return to Glee in an interview with E! News and said she’d love to do that:
“I love Glee. I will always love Glee. I love Ryan Murphy. It just holds such a special place in my heart for me… so I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”
With that in mind, Michelle might be one of the few who could return.
While I’ve expressed some disinterest in the idea of a Glee reboot, it does make me curious to see what Murphy would do to make this series work today. It feels like so many people see this show as a testament to the time it was released.
That said, Murphy’s shows have been on a run lately—with American Horror Story: 13, the latest season of Monster, and more. It makes sense that, somehow, Glee would return — and I have a strong feeling we’ll end up hearing Kurt (Chris Colfer) sing “Pink Pony Club” in the next year.
You can stream all six seasons of Glee on Hulu and Disney+.
