House of the Dragon season 3 finale recap: The First Battle of Tumbleton ends in chaos and bloodshed

The House of the Dragon season 3 finale finally has arrived, and it's all about to go down in Tumbleton. We're here to recap it live as soon as the episode airs.

House of the Dragon season 3 episode 8 airs at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on Sunday, Aug. 9, on HBO and HBO Max.

Heading into the finale, there have been some really big signs that we're going to see the First Battle of Tumbleton. Oscar Tully and Roddy the Ruin are leading the Rivermen and Winter Wolves to Tumbleton to bring the pain to Ormund Hightower and the Greens. But, as we learned at the end of episode 7, Ormund also has a surprise for everyone if Ulf White and Silverwing actually change sides.

Down in King's Landing, Rhaenyra is dealing with a massive problem of her own. Aegon is back from the dead, along with Sunfyre, and he just burned up a bunch of soldiers in the forest. She also learned Daemon and Rhaena and Sheepstealer betrayed her.

So, that's where things stand heading into the last episode of the season. Let's start the recap now!

Rhaenyra learns Aegon is alive 

The finale begins with Grand Maester Orwyle running into Rhaenyra’s bedchamber to wake the queen. He tells her that Aegon has returned and that Sunfyre is alive. In a panic, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) rushes in to tell Daemon (Matt Smith) the news. Those loyal to Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) are sending ravens throughout the Seven Kingdoms claiming that he has been resurrected and deserves to rule. 

Daemon tries to reassure her, but she continues to panic about A Song of Ice and Fire, the prophecy, and her father. She believes she’s matched every challenge, but the Gods continue to punish her. Daemon tells her again that it’s her time to rise and meet his new challenge. 

Rhaenyra instructs Daemon to take Tumbleton by any means necessary. They will kill Ormund Hightower (James Norton) and Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), and then, they’ll search for Aegon and kill him next.

Baela argues with Rhaenyra 

Baela (Bethany Antonia) tries to convince Rhaenyra to send her into Tumbleton now to rescue Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), but Rhaenyra tells her that she’ll find Corlys after Tumbleton is won. Baela challenges her and blames her for Corlys’ situation. Rhaenyra snaps back. It’s clear that she’s lost her mind. 

The Velaryon men arrive in King’s Landing, and Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim) meets them. They wonder why they are in King’s Landing when their lord has been kidnapped. Alyn tells them that he’s going to be Lord of the Tides if Corlys is killed, so they better watch themselves.

Daeron the Daring becomes a knight 

In Tumbleton, Ormund Hightower’s army prepares for battle. The rivermen are closing in. The Tumbletonians are summoned inside the city’s walls. Ormund knights Daeron, and he becomes Ser Daeron the Daring, and they are ready to light the way. 

In Tumbleton, Ulf White (Tom Bennett) has lost his mind. He’s in the tavern telling anyone who will listen that Rhaenyra won’t let Daemon join the battle. Ulf has had a few drinks, but it looks like he’s ready to become a traitor. 

Mysaria is fired before Rhaenyra heads to meet the High Septon

Back in King’s Landing, Rhaenyra is alerted about Helaena’s condition. Helaena (Phia Saban) still will not eat. Rhaenyra is not interested. She requests Ser Alyn to escort her to the sept. She’s going to be anointed by the High Septon today in front of the crowds. 

Immediately after, Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) is fired. Rhaenyra’s servant informs her that Mysaria is sailing for Pentos immediately. She’ll be given an escort and a mansion with servants. 

Mysaria warns Helaena about what Rhaenyra will do to her

Helaena’s dreams continue. She appears to be losing her grip on reality. She sees the horse cart and carriage again. 

Then, she sees Mysaria being escorted from the castle, and Mysaria informs her that Aegon and Sunfyre live. While they are alive, Helaena and her baby are hostages. She also says that she will never be released. 

Alys reveals that her incredible and cursed backstory

In Harrenhal, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) wakes up from a bad dream, but at least he’s not dead. He realizes that his mother poisoned him. Alys (Gayle Rankin) chases with Aemond, who confessed to killing his brother, Aegon, but he doesn’t know that Aegon is not dead yet. 

Alys reveals that Balerion burned Harrenhal and destroyed the Harren line, but that wasn’t true. A baby boy survived. The boy’s mother tried to cure him with maesters, but it didn’t work. She turned to witchcraft and other things. The boy died, and she wanted to go with him, but the things she had done to try to save him cursed her.

Alys Rivers is actually Lord Harren’s wife, and she’s cursed to remain in the Riverlands. That would mean she's over 100 years old.

Rhaenyra has Helaena force-fed 

Back with Helaena, Rhaenyra tries to convince Helaena to eat. She says that she won’t kill her, but Helaena doesn’t believe this life is worth living as a hostage. 

Helaena tells a story about a beetle that only exists in King’s Landing that survives on the waste of other creatures. It only comes in summer. She finds it beautiful. She tells Rhaenyra that she is ugly and all the things she cares about are ugly. There is no beauty here. 

Rhaenyra forces her to eat, but Helaena is not interested. The guards strapped her to a chair and forcefully fed her. 

It’s awful to watch. This might be the hardest scene episode to watch, even though there’s a battle still to come. 

Rhaenyra’s men, then, escort Prince Joffrey and Rhaenyra to the sept. After, Mysaria escapes her carriage, and she goes on her own in the city.

The First Battle of Tumbleton is about to begin

In Tumbleton, the Winter Wolves, Tullys, and Blacks arrive outside the castle walls.

Daeron, Gwayne (Freddie Fox), and Ormund watch on, and Gwayne claims this is all pointless. 

Jon Roxton reveals to Ormund that Ulf is not with his dragon. He’s somewhere missing in the city. Ormund is furious, and he sends Roxton after him. Daeron panics, and he tells Gwayne that he’s going to take to the skies. Gwayne tells him no, but there’s another plan. 

They try to get Corlys to fight for them, but Corlys isn’t interested. He tells them that he only has honor left. Gwayne pulls out his knife and says they’ll do it the hard way. 

Gwayne tries to trade Corlys to stop the battle, but it backfires

Outside the city, Daemon arrives with Caraxes. He rides with Roddy and Oscar Tully, and they are summoned to meet Gwayne and Corlys outside the city. Gwayne tries to bargain behind Ormund’s back. They argue about Rhaenyra’s ability to lead. Corlys tries to convince Daemon to give Daeron Oldtown, have him wed Rhaena, and seal off the pact to unite the realm. 

Daemon refuses. Aegon and Aemond live, and they won’t stop until they win. He calls Corlys a traitor and a craven. Corlys tries to bring peace, but Daemon isn’t interested. He takes Corlys, and he grabs Gwayne by the throat. He gives him a chance to die now or later. It looks like Gwayne chooses the latter.

And it looks like the battle is about to begin.

Aegon reunites with Aemond at Harrenhal

At Harrenhal, Aemond staggers around in the half-destroyed castle. A dragon crashes. It’s Sunfyre and Aegon. Aemond begs Aegon for forgiveness. Aegon laughs and tells him that he should have Sunfyre burn him alive. 

Aegon wants to fight him, but Aemond won’t. Aemond again begs forgiveness for what he’s done. Alys walks out when Aegon has his sword at Aemond’s neck. Aegon is like, who is this person? Aemond claims that she’s his betrothed. 

Aegon orders him to join him and fight against Rhaenyra after they sort out Ormund and Daeron at Tumbleton. If he does help him become king again and take the Iron Throne, Aegon might forgive him.

Daemon shares the battle plan to take Tumbleton

Daemon meets with Roddy, Oscar, and Black Aly. He shares the battle plans.

Apparently, Ormund has lined the walls with children. Roddy is going to lead the Winter Wolves over the walls into the city, and then they are going to open the gate. Then, they walk in and win. Simple enough, right? What could possibly go wrong?

Rhaenyra kills the High Septon and proclaims herself "The Prince That Was Promised"

Rhaenyra bursts into the sept, and she orders the High Septon to anoint her the Queen. He declines, and he throws his support behind Aegon. He tells her that he can’t oppose the will of the Gods. Rhaenyra claims that makes him a traitor. The High Septon tries to talk his way out of it, and Alyn kills him after Rhaenyra claims that he’s the blood of Old Valyria. He serves higher Gods. 

Outside the sept, Rhaenyra gives a speech to the commonfolk who have gathered. She tells them the story of Viserys the Peaceful naming her his heir. It’s intercut with Ormund trying to find Ulf in Tumbleton and others around the Seven Kingdoms. 

Rhaenyra continues to cite the prophecy and stakes her claim as the ruler of Westeros. She claims that she must light the way as the shield of the people because she’s Rhaenyra the Chosen, the Prince That Was Promised. 

Roddy leads the Winter Wolves into battle

In Tumbleton, Daemon gives a speech and tells his men to give no mercy, grant no quarter, and kill them all, the Hightowers. This is the beginning of the end of the Hightower line. Roddy takes over, and he’s ready to lead the Winter Wolves into battle. 

Roddy begs them to shoot the arrows, and one takes out his left-hand man. Then, they charge into battle. 

Ormund and Roxton still can’t find Ulf, and then Daeron goes missing 

Roxton reveals that he can’t find Ulf anywhere. One of the servants reveals that Daeron ordered Gwayne to try to stop the battle by trading Corlys. It didn’t work. Now, Daeron is missing. 

Outside, the Winter Wolves climb the walls, while the Tullys take the South Wall. Roddy is one of the first over the wall, and he wipes out a ton of Hightowers, but they hold for now. Daemon learns that Ulf is missing. 

Then, Hugh arrives with Vermithor, even though he’s supposed to be at King’s Landing. Daemon decides it’s his turn to enter the battle. He brings Caraxes in, and he starts burning down the gates. But the Hightowers put kids in front of the doors. Daemon begs them to move, and when they do, Caraxes burns the gates down so the cavalry can come in. 

Ormund finally finds Ulf on the toilet 

Ormund finds Ulf on the toilet asleep and nearly vomits because of the smell. Ormund beats him up, and then, he sends Ulf into battle. 

Meanwhile, Daemon and the Winter Wolves are absolutely crushing Ormund’s men. Daemon sees Hugh Hammer looking for his wife. Jon Roxton finds Daemon, and a fight ensues. 

Daeron prepares for battle, and then Gwayne finds him getting on Tessarion. Gwayne tries to talk him out of going into battle by referencing Criston Cole. In fact, Gwayne won’t let him into the battle. 

Ulf turns on the Blacks and kills their whole army, basically

Then, Ulf arrives, and the Blacks cheer, just in time for Ulf to turn around and burn them alive. The Blacks flee, and it’s clear this battle has taken a turn.

Ormund, Gwayne, and Daeron watch while Ulf kills the Rivermen. 

Ormund and Roddy are killed by Ulf and Silverwing 

Roxton beats the hell out of Daemon, while Roddy finds Ormund Hightower. An epic fight ensues on the battlements.

Roddy nearly kills him, but then Ormund stabs him and cuts his arm off, which makes Ormund gag. Roddy doesn’t give up, though. He stabs Ormund in the butt, and then Ulf kills both of them in a burst of dragonfire. 

Ulf also torches the place where Gwayne and Daeron are, and the building collapses around them.

The Greens win the First Battle of Tumbleton but lose their leader and suffer major losses

Daemon nearly dies when a building collapses around him, which saves him from Roxton. Ulf burns the city down. 

Daemon continues fighting his way out of the city. Corlys finds him, and he tells him that they are leaving. Gwayne wakes up and looks for Daeron. Roxton finds Ormund’s burnt body. 

Later, Hugh Hammer finds Kat’s body. She’s been killed. 

Overall, the Greens technically win the First Battle of Tumbleton because Daemon and the Blacks are unable to take the city, but there's not much city left to take after Ulf burned it to the ground. We also saw the Greens lose their leader, Ormund, and potentially Daeron Targaryen, their king.

Helaena dies by suicide 

Back in King’s Landing, Helaena finishes her tapestry, and then she heads to the window. Later, Rhaenyra finds her room empty and the window open. 

Somewhere nearby Harrenhal, Alicent sees a bunch of butterflies flying. 

Then, we see her body on the spikes on the ground below. 

Inside, Rhaenyra finds the tapestry that Helaena was working on. It appears to show Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne. The episode ends with Rhaenyra closing the window. 

And that's the end of House of the Dragon season 3. Maybe it's recency bias, but that was the biggest, most epic, and most tragic episode of the series to date.

Now, we just have to wait for House of the Dragon season 4!
