Every Emmy Award nomination and win for Succession over the years

HBO's drama Succession is a favorite at the major award shows. Let's look back at their Emmys history.

Fans across the globe said goodbye to Succession in 2023 when the acclaimed HBO drama concluded its fourth and final season, and now, the cast and crew get to celebrate their success with the awards season. The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards was rescheduled from Sept. 2023 to Jan. 2024 because of the writers' and actors' strikes last year, which fortunately came to an end before the year was up. Now, we're predicting a big night for Succession yet again as we officially bid adieu to one of the best shows of the decade.

The 75th Primetime Emmys takes place this evening, Monday, Jan. 15, at 8:00 p.m. ET. You can watch the prestigious ceremony live on Fox, or tomorrow on Hulu. No matter who wins, it's bound to be a very exciting night! Succession swept in their categories at the Golden Globes earlier this month, so I'm hoping for the same at the Emmys. While we wait for the show to start, we're looking back at every Emmy Award nomination and win the show has earned since it premiered in 2018. I already miss this show so much!

2019 Emmys

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards marked the first time Succession was recognized at the show after premiering in June 2018. This Emmy Awards took place on Sept. 22, 2019, when Game of Thrones took home the award for Outstanding Drama Series. That marked the HBO fantasy phenomenon's final run at the Emmys for its final season, so it totally makes sense they won the big award. That said, it was great to see the first season of Succession getting nominations and even two wins.

The first season of Succession is either my favorite or second favorite (I can't decide!) and “Nobody Is Ever Missing,” which Jesse Armstrong won an Emmy for, is one of my favorite episodes of any TV show. Well deserved!

Won:

  • Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series: Jesse Armstrong for “Nobody Is Ever Missing”
  • Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music: Nicholas Britell

Nominated:

  • Outstanding Drama Series
  • Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series: Francine Maisler, Douglas Aibel, Henry Russell Bergstein
  • Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series: Adam McKay for “Celebration”

2020 Emmys

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards was a weird one, as because it took place on Sept. 20, 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the nominees attended virtually. Winners appeared on the screen to accept their awards from home, which was both strange but also endearing. That year, Succession was recognized for its second season, and with Game of Thrones over, they won big. Not only did they win Outstanding Drama Series, but they also won awards for acting, directing, editing, and casting.

The second season of Succession isn't one of my favorites but it certainly has fantastic episodes. My favorite of the season would be the finale, "This Is Not for Tears," which marks a monumental moment for Kendall and his relationship with his father Logan. I'm glad Jeremy Strong received his an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Kendall this year.

2022 Emmys

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, which took place on Sept. 12, 2022, was back in person and again, Succession won big. This ceremony celebrated the third season of the drama, which is, I have to admit, my least favorite. Honestly, I just felt like the ongoing drama between the siblings and their dad was starting to feel repetitive and stale at this point. I still loved the show, but my passion for it was dwindling a tiny bit. I did, however, really enjoy the season finale, "All The Bells Say," which Jesse Armstrong won an Emmy for.

In 2022, Matthew Macfadyen won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Tom Wambsgans, which was overdue! I hope he wins at this evening's ceremony as well.

Won:

  • Outstanding Drama Series
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: Matthew Macfadyen
  • Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series: Jesse Armstrong for "All The Bells Say"
  • Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series: Avy Kaufman, Francine Maisler

  • Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Sarah Snook

2023 Emmys (rescheduled to 2024)

I'll be the first to admit that I was starting to get a little bit bored of Succession in the third season, but the fourth totally changed my feelings. The fourth and first seasons are my two favorites, but I'd say the fourth is better in overall quality. I was not expecting to get as emotional as I did watching the final season! One second I'd be laughing, then I'd be crying. I was rooting for every character one episode and the next I was yelling at them through my TV. The fourth season is incredibly compelling and thought-provoking, and it deserves all the awards. Kieran Culkin, particularly, is a standout of the season.
