The Silo season 3 finale is her. The whole season has seemingly been leading to this point.
We have been tracking the story of Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) and her fight for freedom in Silo 18 in the present. We've also been tracking Daniel (Ashley Zukerman) and Helen (Jessica Fenwick) and their search for the truth in the past. After the big twist in Silo season 3 episode 9, we know that those two storylines are inextricably linked. The question is how they would tie together.
The season 3 finale, “Troy,” gives us that answer.
Meet Troy
The finale wastes no time in showing that the theory of Silo 1 is correct and that the people we’ve been following all season are running the show, but they aren’t themselves.
Daniel is brought out of a cryogenic freeze, but he thinks his name is Troy and he’s a specialist working for the Silo. Essentially, it’s clear this was the plan all along for Daniel because of his unique skill set. Victor (Matt Craven) is still there helping run the show and fully in control of who he is and his relation to the world.
Troy was awakened because Silo 17 was in a full-blown rebellion. The operator trying to control things, going by the name Susan, is actually Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay). But Troy has no recognition of Susan, and she has no recognition of him. They are merely cogs in the machine. As the people of Silo 17 — nearly 1,000 of them — get out, Troy orders their execution to keep things quiet. When Susan objects, he has her removed and reported for insubordination.
Troy takes command and calmly puts his plan into effect. He gasses the stairs to prevent anyone from returning and opens fire, bombing the people with gas along the way. When all of them are killed, Troy and Victor report to the director, Senator Thurman (Laura Innes).
Troy further proves his disconnection from who he used to be as he argues that Susan should be terminated for her lack of performance.
The Director decides against it, but it’s clear that Troy no longer remembers the world of Daniel. Except that the truth is breaking in. He had flash memories of Helen, the closest connection in his life that he could never let go. He decides to ask Victor.
Victor says he has no idea, and Troy heads back to sleep.
But as it pulls back, we learn this isn’t the first time that Troy has asked about Helen. No matter how long he’s in the process and how much he’s been drugged, there are things he can’t let go. And, clearly, the deception and the whole project are taking a toll on Victory.
Silo 18
As we return to the present, it turns out Victor was the voice working with Camille (Alexandria Riley) to put down the rebellion. As it becomes clear a team is moving to cap the pipe, Victor activates a safeguard. Camille pleads for time as she sends Raiders into the mines with gas, and Victor yields, offering five minutes. We learn it was all a ruse. Camille sent the Raiders into the mines with oxygen, no longer willing to blindly follow orders.
The delay is enough time for Knox (Shane McRae) and Shirley (Remmie Milner) to complete the mission and cap the pipe. Victor’s attempt to put down the rebellion has failed. He orders Troy brought out of cryofreeze and turns to some quiet time in his office. He pulls out a gun and ends his tour of duty for good.
Back in Silo 18, both Juliette and Rob (Common) are somewhat surprised to learn that Camille has come back to the side of good. Sadly, it’s too late for Bernard (Tim Robbins), who had to be sacrificed to buy time. Juliette takes a group to the basement to find the door that is down there and see where it leads. It is her only idea for how to make it safe to bring the people from Silo 17 over to Silo 18.
That door, known as the forward vault, is monitored. With Troy awake, he takes the reins in Silo 1 and orders the people to stop. He offers Juliette a deal — they will be safe and immune from reprisal if they stay away. She hastily agrees.
As the group moves away from the door, they’re stunned.
Later, Juliette shares that she doesn’t believe Silo 1 will ever stop, so they need to be stopped.
Indeed, Troy is determined to find a way to implement the safeguard in Silo 18. At least his is for now. He learns Victor is dead but seems unfazed. He goes back to researching plans for Silo 18, looking for a weakness. As he does, Victor’s final message pops up. He gives Troy a name — Helen Drew. It’s clear the name is enough to unlock something buried deep in Daniel and bring it to the surface.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Silo season 2, which felt disconnected and dry at times. But it was setting the stage for something bigger. That was the case in season 3, too, as they were setting the stage for most of the run until we got to the big reveals, which set up a big showdown and hopefully a big resolution in season 4.
