We’ve seen that Silo season 3 is moving on two tracks. There is the threat inside the Silo in the present and the way Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) and others are fighting against the tide of the machines that run it.
We’re also seeing a glimpse of the past and the reasoning behind how we got to this point. Those stories are starting to merge as we near the end of season 3. That continues in episode 7, “Radio,” where things are nearing a fever pitch in the Silo and Daniel (Ashley Zukerman) is nearing some answers in the past.
Getting answers
As we wrapped up episode 6, Daniel and Helen (Jessica Henwick) arrived at a secret hanger. They were greeted by Senator Thurman (Laura Innes). She promises they will learn the truth and they will get answers. But first they have to agree to keep it a secret — meaning no reporting for Helen, either. That at first seems like a tall ask.
It turns out they aren’t alone. Charlotte (Jessica Brown-Findlay) is there, having recovered some memories of the past and now seeking answers about what happened. That’s enough to turn the tide for Daniel, who is in. Helen is still torn, especially learning it will be at least five years before she can report on what she learns. But she’s come too far and eventually agrees.
As they get to the private plane, it turns out the architect of the plan is one of the wealthiest men (Colin Hanks) on the planet. That raises as many questions as it answers, but this episode isn’t about that final answer. After a longish flight that allows time for them to connect and catch up in different groups, they arrive at a tract of land where giant drills are boring into the Earth. It doesn’t take a lot of guessing to wonder what they’re building, but hopefully the next three weeks will be about the why.
Silo 17
Juliette breaks it to Kennedy (Rick Gomez) and Kyle (Avi Nash) that she needs them to go to Silo 17. Part of it is to rescue the kids, yes. But it’s also the mission they know about to stop the safeguard. And with the drugs already going into the water supply, the clock is ticking for everyone in the Silo. Kennedy isn’t wild about taking on the mission, but Kyle is all in. That is enough, eventually, to sway Kennedy. Both agree and prepare to go. With the drugs already in the water, they don’t wait for the morning; they send the duo out early.
Turns out that the entity running the Silo is ready. As Juliette and others listen on the radio, things go poorly. It ends up sounding like a hail of gunfire. The entity that runs the Silo and Camille (Alexandria Riley) have ended the potential threat. Camille reports to Juliette that Kennedy and Kyle are dead, which leaves her scrambling.
A dangerous choice
With the mission to Silo 17 a failure, those trying to save the Silo — which includes Rob (Common) — are desperate. Rob has been discovered by his wife, which means his ability to help is curbed. But they need judicial passes, which Rob secures using his son for cover. That further enrages Camille, putting their tenuous relationship on the brink.
Worse yet, the team pushes Juliette to sign off on a mission using a bomb to destroy the drugs. The plan has the potential to kill thousands, and Juliette is hesitant. So, Bernard (Tim Robbins) brings in Gloria Hildebrand (Sophie Thompson), who used to help collect artifacts. One of them is the Mission Diary, which chronicled the last time drugs were used in the Silo. That is not without danger, as thousands lost hope when they lost their memory and ended up dying. Faced with a terrible choice, Juliette signs off on the attack.
The mission is in motion. At the site of the attack, they spot Rob and Camille, meaning their inside man would be in the blast radius. Despite that, they move forward. But just as they’re about to trigger the explosion, a voice on the radio comes through. It’s Kennedy. He’s alive, and the mission is still on. The order to scrub the explosion comes just in time, and everyone in the Silo lives for another day.
We have long known the past was about how the Silos were built and, hopefully, why. It’s the why that I’m most curious to understand as we move forward. There’s also the question of the Silo.
Juliette is trying to stop all the fail safes, but is that an impossible task? Is this road to rebellion leading to a dark end regardless? Those are the questions to answer with three episodes left!
