Apple TV’s Silo season 3 is gliding its way towards one of the best buildups the show has given us. Understandably, the whole affair with Juliette losing her memories seemed likely to lead to an infuriatingly slow-burn conclusion, but the recent episode has drastically shifted the narrative.
The most shocking aspect of episode 5 and episode 6 wasn’t that Sims was in on it or Juliette recovered her memories, but the fact that she got to meet the infamous voice in the vault. The Algorithm remains the most intriguing part of season 3, and its identity is a big mystery to viewers.
What’s commendable here is the way the show handled the revelation of an artificial intelligence program controlling and dictating the silos. It was easily assumed that the silos could have been built by humans 300 years ago, and they installed an AI program to run the administrative affairs. However, the more Camille interacts with the Algorithm, the more suspicious the audience becomes about what it truly is.
The Algorithm may not be just a typical AI program
The Algorithm was first introduced back in Silo season 2 when Lukas Kyle found it in the tunnels. Back then, the AI's existence served only as the ‘sinister’ truth about who runs the silo. However, in season 3, the Algorithm’s role has been dramatically upgraded to that of a complete villain.
It’s not Camille who is making the decisions but the Algorithm’s meticulously calculated options that it gives her and then makes her believe she’s calling the shots. It chose Camille for a reason, and that reason is her ability to overlook her morality. It’s hard to believe that an AI model can be sophisticated enough to identify personality traits the way the Algorithm did.
But that’s not the only giveaway about the true identity behind the voice. There’s been chatter within the fandom that the Algorithm is, in fact, a human voice or at least reflects human consciousness as opposed to being a machine that’s just numbers and running diagnostics.
There’s already speculation that the Algorithm sounds a lot like Congressman Daniel, but he’d be a bit over 300 years old if that were the case. However, it’s nothing outlandish to believe that whoever built the silos found a way to conserve Daniel’s consciousness since he and Helen are already in the center of things in the past. Or, it could be someone else.
Silo season 3 may have dropped a few clues about the Algorithm
Silo season 3 is venturing into deep waters as Juliette goes up against the Algorithm and Camille. Contrary to how things run in the silos, Juliette was allowed to talk to the Algorithm in the vault. Of course, the voice stated the obvious over Juliette’s wish to send someone out to silo 17; we couldn’t help but notice that probabilities weren’t the only thing the Algorithm was using in this argument.
For the first time, the Algorithm had elaborate conversations with both Camille and Juliette, and it was hard to miss the subtle hint of emotions lingering in most of the responses. For instance, the Algorithm basically set up Juliette to sniff out both Kennedy and Lukas and sent them to their eventual deaths outside the silo.
As an extension of that calculated move, when Camille asks if the voice tricked Juliette, the AI responded wryly with an extremely subtle pause in between, telling her that Juliette Nichols requires ‘special handling.’ It didn’t sound like the cold and quick responses the voice gave before, and it makes us wonder if there’s something more to it.
In another instance when Camille calls out the voice for making a mistake with Juliette, the Algorithm doesn’t respond immediately. It takes a considerable pause before replying, "What is a mistake?" and the emphasis in its voice is difficult to dismiss.
The Algorithm can just choose to make its responses tight and cold because that’s how artificial intelligence is usually programmed and processed. However, the way the voice handled Camille’s outburst over her failure to be a good mother and IT leader speaks otherwise. It is extremely careful in handling human responses, whether they are emotional, and does it in a way as if a real person would.
Ultimately, there’s a strong connection between the Algorithm and what’s unraveling in the past with Daniel and Helen. What’s more intriguing is that the AI’s voice remains uncredited in the show, which obviously means that its identity is a huge plot twist in the story. So, whether it turns out to be Daniele Keane or someone else behind the Algorithm’s distorted cadence, it’ll be one of the biggest reveals in the show.
