In Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3, Jamie Campbell Bower steps into one of the story’s more mysterious characters. Although a minor character in the Peter Jackson films, Celeborn was fleshed out in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, hinting at what might be in store for him. Alongside cast and crew interviews and previous seasons, a fair prediction of Celeborn’s season 3 story can be made.

Galadriel has spent two seasons mentioning a husband nobody has seen. Her line that she “never saw him again” after he went to war against Morgoth sounded like an obituary without confirming his death. In hindsight, it was a Chekhov’s gun. Celeborn stands beside her in The Fellowship of the Ring, and without him the show cannot account for Celebrían, Elrond’s family line, or Arwen. So, enter Celeborn.

A husband long overdue

Celeborn’s absence was never neutral. Season 1 used the vacancy to build a bond between Galadriel and Halbrand, a closeness coded as temptation while Sauron hid behind a stranger’s smile. Season 2 added Elrond’s kiss, which Morfydd Clark (Galadriel) and the showrunners called platonic, and ended with Galadriel wounded in Rivendell after her duel with Sauron. Tolkien’s writing makes all this intriguing.

In “Laws and Customs among the Eldar,” the Elves are “by nature continent and steadfast,” and they wed “once only in life, and for love.” Yet the same text admits a gap: when a permanent marriage is broken by a partner being slain, the Elves “did not know what should be done or thought.” Galadriel has been in this limbo in seasons 1 and 2, but season 3 will bring a level of closure.

The showrunners bill the new episodes as the series’ first full romance, a love story between two damaged people who must reconnect. Patrick McKay says the plan always included showing how the couple build Lothlórien. J. D. Payne reaches for chemistry: Galadriel alone is “sodium,” the partnership is “salt,” and Celeborn’s return reveals sides of her that audiences have not met.

A thousand years in the dark

Where has he been? McKay says “a series of prisons,” with different orcs shuffling him between them. Bower puts the span at “the last sort of thousand years” and insists this is no triumphant arrival: “He’s not like, ‘Ta-da, here I am!’” The timeline is less awkward than it sounds. Season 3 leaps five years past season 2, but the separation reaches much further back, with Show Snob’s trailer breakdown floating the idea of a captive Celeborn in Mordor.

The man who emerges sounds fragile. At SDCC, Bower describes an innocence and a vulnerability in Celeborn, yet also “battle-scarred,” with “a darkness in him.” He calls the character a “lover-boy,” an antidote after years as Vecna in Stranger Things, and says the pair’s yearning echoes Tolkien and his wife Edith during their time apart: “Celeborn has had to find a way to survive whilst longing.”

But flashbacks to better times will balance the angst. “We’re going to go back to the First Age when they first met in this really romantic, beautiful, epic scene,” the showrunners promised at SDCC. The trailer glimpses the pair dancing in a forest lit by golden lights. In The Silmarillion, Celeborn met Galadriel in the forest kingdom of Doriath.

Hope as a weapon

Bower quotes Nick Cave on joy: “It is choosing hope even in the face of great suffering and great sorrow.” Celeborn, he says, has chosen exactly that, yet he has also “constructed something of his own” that “may or may not be something that could be used against him.” The warning is blunt: “Sauron uses the things that you love the most to cut you.”

Charlie Vickers (Sauron) confirms the Dark Lord is paying attention. “Sauron is familiar with [Celeborn]. He knows who he is,” Vickers says, adding that a meeting might hand Sauron ammunition. Tolkien records little contact between the two before Sauron deceives Eregion, but Vickers suggests an awkward face-to-face in season 3.

Galadriel still carries her psychic link to a Sauron busy forging the final Ring, so Halbrand and Galadriel’s situationship will give way to some kind of season 3 love triangle. This was confirmed by showrunners at San Diego Comic-Con. Although the show is likely done with its Galadriel-Elrond romance tease, bizarre as it is, this could complicate matters further.

What to expect

The War of the Elves and Sauron looms over everything. Tolkien’s Unfinished Tales places Celeborn in Eregion when Sauron invaded, where he “made a sortie” against the enemy, then joined Elrond’s army and the survivors who founded Rivendell. The show hasn’t gone with that version of events, but Celeborn is sure to join the fight for Middle-earth now, with season 3 showcasing the genesis of the Ringwraiths.

Númenor hasn’t fallen yet in the show, so Galadriel, Celeborn, and the rest of Middle-earth will have to contend with that, but likely in season 4. One question remains. With Celebrían’s birth still unmentioned, where is the couple’s daughter? With their canonical romance confirmed, things can only get better for Celeborn and Galadriel once reunited, but it may take a while.

The Rings of Power season 3 premieres on Prime Video on Nov. 11 with four episodes, followed by two more on Nov. 18 and the finale on Nov. 25.

Prime Video has yet to decide the show’s fate beyond season 3, though season 4 is reportedly in early development, so Celeborn’s reunion may only be the beginning.
