Rachel McAdams’ Spotlight Wins at WGA’s but Loses the BAFTA

Spotlight is getting a lot of attention, though Rachel McAdams isn’t at the center.

Rachel McAdams is going from the Academy Award nominated Spotlight to Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Before both of those, however, she was in True Detective. Time flies, as they say. Spotlight is one of the biggest movies of the year, and Rachel McAdams has been getting a lot of accolades for her role in it.

One that she wasn’t able to win, was the BAFTA. That particular lose wasn’t exactly surprising as McAdams wasn’t even nominated in the first place. It was a bit of an oversight since Kate Winslet, Alicia Vikander, Rooney Mara, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Julie Walters were all nominated. That group basically makes up the most talked about supporting actresses of the year.

Spotlight also lost Best Picture at the BAFTA’s, but it was able to win the same award at the WGA’s. The WGA’s (Writer’s Guild of America) specifically celebrate accomplishments in writing, so Rachel McAdam’s part in that particular aspect is minimal at best. Still, a win is a win.

There will be stiff completion at the Academy Awards this year, as Spotlight will have to overcome the juggernaut that is The Revenant to win. Rachel  McAdams herself is also nominated for Spotlight, and if she wins it will be her first Oscar.

While award season has been good for McAdams, it hasn’t been particularly kind to True Detective, which hasn’t been nominated for much and has lost everything it was actually nominated for.
