Here Are Our True Detective Dream Directors

True Detective has one confirm director so far in Justin Lin, and he’s set to be on for at least two episodes. That leaves the other slot wide open with no clear idea when HBO is going to announce the rest. Not to worry, however, because we’ve been trying to tackle this very problem for some time. As things start to take form, here is a list of our Dream Directors that we would love to say take the reins of True Detective, if only for just a single episode.

More from HBO

  • Darren Araonofsky – Most famous perhaps for Black Swan, Araonfsky had already made a name for himself with the masochistic nightmare that is Requiem for a Dream. Aranofsky’s subtle touch and dark tones would fit right at home with True Detective.
  • Jim Jarmusch – Another director who seems like he’d be a perfect fit for season two. Jarmusch is known for his subdued and noir-ish indie films such as Night on Earth and Only Lovers Left Alive.
  • Guillermo Del Toro – Del Toro made mainstream success with Hellboy and later Pacific Rim, but his spanish language films are where the real treats are. Del Toro would perhaps be able to bring us closer to the Lovecraft roots of True Detective than anyone else.
  • David Lynch – One of the biggest inspirations on True Detective, at least from a directorial standpoint. Lynch’s Twin Peaks has become a serious cult hit and his films tend to play out like waking nightmares. He has said that he’s a fan of the series, so we’re free to dream.
  • Ridley Scott – Perhaps the biggest name on this list, Scott is responsible for some of the most iconic films of the 20th century. He has an eye for action as well as more sublet filmmaking, we can only dream with what he’d be able to do with True Detective.

It must be said that none of the above have much in common with Justin Lin, but that doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t be able to bring something unique to season two. These are our top five directors, but what are yours? Let us know!
