5. The Big Lebowski Meets True Detective
This mashup of The Big Lebowski and True Detective is stunning for many reasons, but one of them has got to be the fact that nobody thought of it until this one appeared. It’s brilliant in not only its idea, but also its execution; The Big Lebowski works so brilliantly with True Detective’s opening it’s almost scary.
It feels as if the two were made for each other. It’s a high-water mark for True Detective opening mashups, that’s for sure.
4. True Detective Visits the Coffee Shop
This True Detective spoof, True Barista, was criminal overlooked at the time. Turning Matthew McConaughey’s Rust Cohle into a psychically tormented barista at a coffee shop is an ingenious idea. The two ideas combine to create one of our favorite spoofs, and certainly one that deserves a second look.
Marty trying to get Rust in line as a helpless customer attempts to order is one thing that you never knew you wanted to see.
3. What’s True Detective Doing on Sesame Street?
Unfortunately, you’ll have to head over to EW to see this spoof, but it’s worth the trip. Sesame Street has done a number of spoofs of adult series over the years, so a True Detective parody isn’t as farfetched as it may seem.
In fact, Sesame Street once aired a Twin Peaks parody called Twin Beaks. If nothing else this just further proves how deep True Detective has managed to burrow into popular culture.
2. A Very True Detective Christmas
This True Detective spoof, True Christmas, was a great way to end 2014. A jaded Rust Cohle as Santa lays into his Marty, an elf. It’s a very funny and adeptly staged spoof in which it’s obvious to see the love for the source material.
Even shows twice as popular have not received this kind of spoof treatment. We jus need more holidays to round things out. True Detective Valentines Day? True Detective Arbor Day? Make it happen.
1. Matthew McConaughey Channels Rust Cohle and Watches the Rain
This is neither technically spoor of directly True Detective related, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t belong on this list. Because it so does. The Matthew McConaughey Lincoln ads have a serious True Detective-Rust Cohle vibe to them, and there is something very Rust Cohle about Matthew McConaughey looking out at the rain.
This is an hour-long edit of a much shorter commercial, but there is something so undeniably Rust Cohle about it that it would be impossible to not include it here. So, yes, our final pick isn’t technically a spoof, but what fun would it be if we didn’t cheat a little bit?
Do these five picks do it for you, or do you violently disagree? Let us know!
