Report: Dave Chappelle Working On New HBO Special
By Sam Rideout
Everyone knows that since the abrupt end of Chappelle’s Show nine years ago (wow, time flies!), comedian Dave Chappelle has had a much lower profile on TV than before. It’s been even longer since he’s had a stand-up comedy special on the tube, but that might be changing soon.
According to Comedy Hype, Chappelle used some recent stand-up dates in Texas to shoot material for an all-new special. It doesn’t have a title yet, but it would air first on HBO.
That would be switching sides in the premium cable battle for Chappelle, as his previous special, For What It’s Worth, aired on Showtime. The difference is that HBO has a longer and more famous relationship with stand-up specials, some of which are still rotated through the programming mix on HBO Comedy.
Could it mean the comedian is ready to grace TV with his presence on a more regular basis? I seriously doubt he’d ever put himself back in the pressure cooker of the Chappelle’s Show days, but it’s not out of the question that he’d do comedy specials more than once a decade. If he does, HBO would be as good a landing spot for them an anywhere.
