Whitney Cummings’ Pilot and Comedy Special Coming to HBO
By Sam Rideout
Today was a good day for comedian Whitney Cummings.
HBO picked up her pilot for a new comedy and her latest stand-up comedy special, according to Deadline Hollywood.
The pilot is “inspired by” Maureen Dowd’s book, Are Men Necessary? When Sexes Collide, according to the report. Other than the initial idea, this work has been all Cummings. She created, wrote, and now, will star in the pilot, which is a comedic (obviously) take on relationships.
Ordering a pilot does not mean that HBO has ordered a full series, but they have agreed to bring the idea to life on-screen for one episode, at least. There were no details about when the pilot will be filmed.
There’s no debate that Cummings is one of the best at what she does. Her series, 2 Broke Girls, which airs on CBS, is one of the highest-rated comedies on TV for the last few years.
I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of Whitney Cummings as a show creator. Her NBC show, Whitney, wasn’t good, and I don’t really like 2 Broke Girls, either. It appears I wasn’t the only one who was slightly surprised by HBO ordering Whitney’s new pilot.
As a stand-up comedian, though, I think Whitney’s super funny!
(Warning. There is some foul language in the video.)
And, that brings me to the other good part of Cummings’ day. Her next stand-up special, and her first for HBO, will film some time this fall and will premiere in 2016, according to the report.
Stay tuned for more news about Whitney Cummings’ pilot and her new stand-up special.
