Daily Show Schools John Oliver at Emmys
By Sam Rideout
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver may have been nominated for several Emmys this year, but it went home empty handed at the end of the night. But that’s OK for the hard-hitting, 30-minute news show on HBO. This was its first eligible season for nominations, and John Oliver and company couldn’t have lost to a better successor.
This year was the year of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. John Oliver got his big break as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s news satire variety show. This was the show’s final year with Jon Stewart at the helm. Stewart and the rest of the crew behind the scenes launched so many careers throughout Stewart’s tenure as host.
Years of hard work and being on top of the variety show pack was rewarded at the 67th Annual Emmy Awards. The Daily Show won in the Writing in a Variety Show and Outstanding Variety Show categories. Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was nominated for both awards.
Last Week Tonight is a young show. It has received rave reviews for its in-depth and humorous look at news stories that aren’t getting enough attention in the mainstream media. But without The Daily Show, There would be no Last Week Tonight. Sunday was The Daily Show’s night to shine.
I’m sure John Oliver couldn’t have been happier for Jon Stewart and the rest of the stellar crew that make The Daily Show possible. After all, that was his first showbiz family. The Last Week Tonight crew are going to be a force to be reckoned with during future award seasons. With major nominations during their first eligible year, they’re sure to take plenty of awards for years to come.
