Vinyl Will Hang Around For at Least One More Season
HBO today renewed Vinyl for a second season after only airing the pilot.
HBO’s newest drama series, Vinyl, has been off to a bit of a rough start. The Martin Scorsese directed pilot didn’t bring in anywhere near the expected amount of viewers, though the reviews have been steadily average. HBO hasn’t really had a series like Vinyl before, and it’s possible that it’s going to take some time for it to find its place and build an audience.

To that end, HBO certainly isn’t giving up on their new baby. Today, HBO announced that Vinyl will be returning for a second season. This is surprising for two reasons: its premiere numbers were low, and it has only aired the single episode. It’s not unheard of for a series to be renewed early on, though it certainly is not the norm.
The loss of Martin Scorsese, who was only on board for the pilot episode, likely won’t be an issue since he wasn’t a big draw in the first place. Whether or not Vinyl will actually have enough steam for a second season won’t be more clear until more episodes have aired, but there is certainly enough 70’s rock to go around.
Next: Vinyl's ratings weren't so hot.
Vinyl has some great ideas in the first episode, even if it is ultimately a messy experience. If it can straighten itself out, a second season could end up being very welcome. In the meantime, it will be exciting to at least see which 70’s acts the series draws from.
